*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

Can anyone explain why this phone is considered cheap?
I'm at the end of my current contract so the release timing is pretty ideal as I'd been struggling to pick a new handset (they are all totally huge and to me kinda ugly) and was hoping to reduce the amount having a smartphone costs me.

So Nexus 5 appears and everyone's like wow soooooo cheap, yeah as long as all you want to do is look at it, by the time you have a decent deal on minutes, txts and data it's the same price as any other, arguably better, phone!!!!! Or am I somehow missing the point? Is there a superb sim only deal out there somewhere that makes the phone worthwhile?

Nexus 5 - £340+£360(£15per month sim x 24months) = £710
Xperia Z1,S4,HTC1 - £30per month contract x 24 months = £720

its cheap as SIM FREE headset.. 350 for 32 gb

where one, s4 are around 400-450 and Z1 is closed to 500.. :)

on contract the operators love to put a premium up on nexus devices for w/e reason.. even the sim free version on play store is 300(16gb) and 429 at CPW.

if you don't want to sign a 24 contract this is the best bang for buck phone you can get.

Look at what you get on the contract for the s4 ect.
The £15 sim on 3 is
Unlimited Data,
2,000 minutes
5,000 Three-to-Three minutes.
5,000 texts

Which is more than any of the other ones you can get with the £30+ phones a month.

And the fact of the specs being better....always latest android version amount other things.

Haha my Note 3 deal of £26 x 24months (£624) makes this phone look expensive. :p

Soon to be 4G too.

if you want a cheap good spec phone get the moto G

But SIM free is not in itself cheap right? So I have to care about signing a contract (or maybe have bad credit) in order for this phone to make sense? Otherwise it's actually rather expensive for what you get?

Basically I'm asking should I just buy one of the main contract contenders or is it sufficiently on a par?

edit.
wow lots of posts since i refreshed

Basically, if you buy the phone SIM free it's a fair bit cheaper than the competition. If you buy it on a contract, the shops mark it up so that it comes out very similar to any other high end phone.

There's is no clear winner between the G2, N5, One and GS4. They all have their strengths and weaknesses depending on user preference. All are good phones with top specs.

this! :) the only reason I've got n5 is due to massive(soon to be) modding community, stock android and that it was cheap simfree(my renewal phones are rubbish and I'll be canceling my contract)

but if you want the best phone IMO G2 is a strong one here.. and note3 if you are ok with the size of it :) as kona said all of them have their own strengths and weaknesses

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but how do I prevent the white notification light from coming on when I put the phone in airplane mode? I'm using Light Flow Lite and it seems a bit erratic sometimes (after reading an sms the light remains on, for example).
All in all happy with this phone, nice upgrade from S2. Battery life is pretty good and it is so smooth (let's just hope it remains that way, my Nexus 10 was also impressive at the start and is now quite slow sometimes).

I have a £10 a month sim so £120 a year.

I also change my phone every 12 months nobody wants to be locked into a contract for 24 months with the same phone (obviously this is the more expensive way of doing things but imo it still works out cheaper than a 24 month contract and keeping the same phone for 2 years).

Pity your locked into a 2 year contract though ;)

Pretty much this, you get a lot more for the similar or slightly less money, more flexibility, more minutes, tethering, etc, etc.

Say I go on holiday abroad for a month, I can simply cancel my monthly goodybag and take my phone with me and use any sim from that country.

Usually on a contract phone it is locked and you need to pay to unlock it before you could use any sim in it, plus if you go abroad your still paying for a service your not using.

Flexibility as well as price is better.

That's a mad plan though, I'd rather it was £10 a month (saves £120 over the term) and more realistic who makes 4hrs of calls and sends 165txts every single day!! That's a provider problem though.

Quite, any reason you don't mention the Z1?
