During Windows 8.1 installation my brand new HDD isn't recognized although it is in the BIOS.
The obvious thing to do would be to check that drivers are up to date, which I've done with no success. I then checked that the BIOS it's self was up to date & tried a different SATA port but windows still wont find the thing. I have even tried Ubuntu & an old Windows 7 disk i have lying around, so i know the issue isn't windows 8.1 specific.

My Hardware:
Gigabyte 970A-DS3P
AMD FX6350
XFX R7950 DD
1TB Hitachi ultrastar 3.5 SATA HDD

What do guys? I've had this build for 2 weeks and i've not been able to use it, it's killing me.

Do you have a another working pc to plug the hdd into? If only to initialize it and asign a drive letter to it,it might the show up to install windows to

Is the drive recognised in the BIOS? Do you have the same trouble with another drive on the same SATA port? If the answer is yes to both these questions, I'd say you need to provide the Windows installation with SATA drivers. You can find probably find these on Gigabyte's support page for the motherboard, but I'd download the latest ones if available.

If the drive isn't recognised by the BIOS, try it in another machine. It may be that the drive is faulty.

Thanks for the replys. It is recognized in the BIOS, this means the HDD is ok right? I'll try it in this PC anyway.
I've already updated the latest drivers, although i get no conformation from Windows to tell me they have installed properly, is this normal?

Edit: I've just connected the new HDD in this computer and it's not showing.. Looks like the hard drive is the problem.

Hang on, for some reason I assumed you were installing Windows on to it. You're connecting it alongside another harddrive (which has Windows already installed) and Windows isn't detecting it? Does Windows show as detecting new hardware? Have you looked in Drive Management?

You need to go to disk management to create a partition on the new drive. They don't come pre-format or partitioned, so create a new partition, and format the drive.

I am installing Windows onto it. As somebody on here recommended, i connected it to a working PC and it isn't recognized on it either.

@daveip, i checked in there also and it is not shown.

it should show up in windows idk why it isn't tbh,ive got the same drive myself and it works fine in win7 and win8.1

so idk whats up? do you feel/hear it spinup?

if it clicks a lot then seemslike its faulty

I think you can check if its in warranty or not on seagates website, type in the serial number on the hdd

If you connect another working harddrive to the same SATA cable, is is recognised? If not, that's saying to me drivers.
