Couldn't make this **** up.
The basic premise was that they couldn't afford to divert time and resources away from the projects that were keeping the company afloat and that if people wanted to see an elite game developed then the kickstarter would give them the ability (both from the interest there giving other backers some confidence and the money raised from the kickstarter) to use some gaps to work on elite rather than using that time chasing other projects that would be paying the bills.
