Hey all.

Looking at getting an upgrade for my Q6600 this xmas from the wife and i just need clarification on a few things. I already have my HDD's, GPU, PSU (potentially, its a Corsair HX550. i think its ok for what i need) sorted but i need to make sure im not forgetting anything.

MOBO - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-521-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2265

CPU - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-406-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1275

RAM - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-363-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1390

If anyone can confirm that what i have selected is ok and if they could recommend anything else? My budget is around £300.

Thanks in advance

Slightly cheaper in case budget can't stretch too much right now, but processor isn't overclockable. If you want overclocking options, get the CPU* Fowler recommended.

* Edit: And the Gigabyte mobo with cooler too.

going with the 4670k with that motherboard will require a third party cpu cooler making it similar/more than(depending on the cooler chosen) than what I speced.

Yes. If my budget could stretch enough to go for the K, I'd definitely get the Gig mobo with cooler you recommended also.

I have a 3rd party cooler. Would i need to purchase a special one though for the k?

well this is what your basket looks like with your chosen bits

that's only £27 less than my suggestion, I'm sure you can find the ~£30 extra from somewhere. don't go out drinking for a day or 2 or something.

well it depends if it supports 1155/1150 socket, the q6600 is socket 775.

that would be better, little over budget but will last longer than what you've posted(tho ram twice).

Haswell is happy with faster RAM, with prices so close it just makes sense to get the faster kit (your 1600Mhz choice is in fact more expensive). Only real mistake Fowler made was forgetting the free P&P ;)

You can always consider the OEM i5K which is slightly cheaper. Yes it has a shorter warranty but let's be honest CPU failure is very very rare and you don't need the stock heatsink as the D3HP comes with a decent ~£30 heatsink to allow overclocking.

If you have a decent heatsink already that fits the 1155/1150 socket.....

Much better onboard audio and it's Xfire/SLI capable (you'd need a stronger PSU to use that feature though). It really is a ridiculously excellent value mobo for the money. I'll whack in an AMD spec as someone is bound to point it out as an option.......
