Why can't I play my old games?

I think you need help :) how hard is it to understand that the architecture is completely different and the only person to blame for buying it is you, also Sony will not die in 5 years because you and some other oblivious people in this planet buy things with their eyes closed..

I don't see the problem? You have a PS3 I presume yes? You had a ps4 too, you could still play on both platforms?

Tbh I'm happy Sony are not screwing us over by charging more for a console with backwards compatibility.

So what happened to all your old videos when you upgraded to DVDs? Occasionally this happens. Get over it.

On a side note, I struggle to see what job would prevent you from having a PS3 and a PS4. You're still going to spend the same amount of time playing games no matter how many consoles you have, unless you have some extra hands.

Look - I see your point but WHY should you need a PS3 and a PS4, when the PS4 could do everything anyway? That's what I am getting at, what you guys are arguing is effectively like saying you should have 10 different Blu Ray players to enjoy 10 different Blu Ray movies. It stinks of inefficiency.

The whole point of this thread was to establish whether it was an issue with architecture or a corporate/strategic issue. At no point when I pre-ordered my PS4 was I made aware it wouldn't be compatible with the hundreds of pounds I had previously spent on PS3 games. I do not understand why this simple fact is causing such a storm.

Firstly, fair enough - you've taken it back. Each to their own. Incidentally, I'm not defending the PS4 as I'm a particularly big fan of it - I haven't bought one yet, and won't be doing so until next year after I've finished all the PS3 games I'm playing.

There are times when a company will look at what they are doing and have to make difficult decisions. Take the example of VHS --> DVD. Clearly, some exec somewhere would have said "but people won't be able to play their old films on the new machines". This was taken as a necessary, albeit unwelcome, consequence of upgrading the format.

It's similar here. Yes, it's frustrating not being able to play old games. Yes, they may lose out on sales - I would probably have a PS4 by now if I could play The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls on it. Sony will have weighed up the benefits of the new architecture against the disbenefits, including the lack of backwards compatibility, and decided that it was worth it.

So yes, I guess that in a way you were right - it was a decision based on profits - but the point that they're just out to shaft consumers is pushing it a bit.

Even i knew that the ps4 would not play ps3 games, it was common knowledge, really though if your spending that much on a console you should have done some research on the product your buying first.

This is such an invalid argument on so many levels. Why should I have a blu-ray player that doesn't play DVDs for example. It is absolutely ridiculous. I am so furious that it turns out it isn't in fact a compatibility reason but more so some greedy corporate scum at Sony trying to screw us over. You think I'm joking, but my PS4 has been sent back to Game. They can frankly **** off. You can keep on giving them money though mate, it's your earnings.

I feel very, very strongly about this. It is unacceptable, full stop. I can't play the games I paid £50 for. Well done Sony, lose my business and I know why you will be dead in 5 years.

You must be trolling LOL

I knew this thread would create a storm.

I don't know mate, maybe because I've spent hundreds of pounds on what turns out to be complete waste.

I have sent it back btw, my job gives me very little time to enjoy gaming and if they cannot offer a console that is backwards compatible then they can goto hell to be honest. 300 back in my account thank you. It was an ugly piece of crap anyway.

Roffle there is some serious cognitive dissonance going on here.

You have no idea what you are talking about. No one is saying anything of the sort. Bluray movies aren't comparable to games from 2 different consoles.

Your example is more akin to HD-DVD and Bluray movies, otherwise why aren't you ranting that the PS4 doesn't play Xbox One games, as that uses bluray disks too.

It's not the same thing at all.

Has your rage affected your reading comprehension? It's been explained that, in addition to having no business case whatsoever, the PS4 uses entirely different hardware architecture to the PS3 so it'd have meant more work and ultimately, more expense passed on to the consumer.

I feel very, very strongly about this. It is unacceptable, full stop. I can't play the games I paid £50 for. Well done Sony, lose my business and I know why you will be dead in 5 years.

Somehow I don't think one disgruntled customer is going to bother them when they've already managed to outsell the Wii U in total UK sales.

Considering the PS3 hasn't been backwards compatible since 2007 or 2008, I've no idea what you were expecting really. Although if you're paying £50 for PS3 games, who knows.

I was always a very casual gamer.

Then perhaps buying a newly-launched console wasn't the smartest idea in the first place.

This thread is going to have a nice shiny padlock icon next to it soon.

The PS3 couldn't play PS2 games either? :p (unless you count the very early ones which broke all the time)

LOL at OP.

Your sent back PS4 has already been sold on by Game to somebody else who isn't stupid enough to not do a 1 minute Google search.

Fail.

LOL, this thread is almost as stupid as the one from the guy complaining about being charged after entering his credit card details for a free trial and not cancelling.

Ohh and at what point did they say it would play all your old games, you realize it doesn't make you a sandwich and a cup of tea either don't you?? I was gutted when I found that out..

I thought the ps3 playing ps1 games but not the ps2 games? At op, while i havent bought a ps4 due to the 2 dozen ps3 games ive got to polay through (thanks ps+ :)) i might have bought one if it was BC.
