Virgin Media Discussion Thread

We got the SH2 free when upgraded to Tivo, so was done at the same time.

It took me a few calls to get mine for free.

VMs smartcall app is doing my head in. I can phone any land line but not mobiles ect
even though I have a 1000(free) mins a month to call any phone device world wide

Got the price increase letter, so reduced my package and payed line rental up front

Now they get £300 less from me a year *****.

They won't put it under the floor but if you have a good engi he will leave you with enough cable to do it yourself. Ours did.

Had the install, the engineer John was a top bloke and was happy to run everything under the floor so I've no internal boxes, its all hidden away.

To be fair I had the floor up anyway and all the cable pulls in already. He was happy for me to pull the cable while he did the external connections then by the time he was done I'd pulled and routed the internal cables ready to be crimped up and connected.

I'm very impressed with the level of service the engineer provided, but I guess you get good and bad installs.

im currently using super hub v1 as a modem only as i use my own router

is it worth getting a super hub v2 if will only use it for modem mode?

Had my install on Saturday afternoon. All went well, engineer was a top bloke.

Had to reboot SH on Sunday evening because I couldn't load any web pages or use any software that needed the internet. Not a very good start. If it keeps up like this I'll be cancelling within the first 28 days.

It appears I'm on the Fareham ubr now whereas I was only on the Cosham one. Actually the Fareham one links to the Cosham one according to a traceroute so they must have combined their links at some point.

No complaints, just didn't think that part of the network changed!

With the price increase, recent flakey connection and the fact that even with 60mb youtube videos freeze (but don't on my phones 3G connection!) I have finally given up. Plusnet are installing a line in a few days, then will see what FTTC I can get.

With all the threads and posts i have read regarding VM, both from people with complaints, and people with problems requesting help and those just simply frustrated and needing to vent a little.

that highlighted comment above as well as the one above it, is one that i think pretty much all can agree on, once you get past the faceless phone voice, and down to dealing with the people that come out to work on your install, they are all well spoken of, and seem to take pride in doing their job as best they can, no matter how much company policy tries to hinder that.

so to any of them reading this.... thank you

Oooh guess what just got delivered, SuperHub v2 :D

Edit*

The guy on the phone seemed to think the blue tick LED would turn green when the line was activated... it's only a blue LED and the only green one is the up/down status LED that turns blue once active... Oh well. He also cut the phone call off randomly, my phone had full reception and I used an 0800 wizard app that routed via a local number so the call didn't cost me anything thankfully since I was on the line for 34 minutes...

Line seems to be running good, speeds are good too. Will monitor latency over the next few days and power levels are lower now too (still have the 10dB attenuator the engineer installed):

great news, sorry to be a pain but can you post also post up your tbbg in a few days time as would be helpful when complaining to VM. Will stick with the Forums also as there phone support is rubbish.

I've just had virgin cable installed in my new house with a sh2 are there any advanced setting I should change to make the connection better?? I play bf4 so want it to be good for that. Thanks

I've got the 60mb line

Anything? Is there any info I can post to help out??

Any help would be gratefully received...

this is mine just using the superhub 1 not in modem mode

updated my Asus N66u firmware today and SH running in modem mode

very happy with that!
however my Asus N66u arrived from overclockers today. so any tips when setting it up? do i just put the sh in modem mode and connect it to the n66. did you just flash the latest asus firmware?

pretty much as simple as that mate.

I'm guessing lmfy2k might be running Merlin's custom firmware which updated a week or so ago.

Great firmware, if your interested here is the link, just load the firmware like you would the Asus firmware and click upload.

Yep. Using Merlin's latest firmware

Only thing I had to do with modem only mode is when setting up the Asus using the wizard, use the mac clone feature. That is enter the MAC address of the SH in the says wizard when it comes to that screen.

The rest is easy to setup.

Did you have to clone the mac address? I thought that was for Ethernet WANs which limit their port usage to one mac address. Like some uni halls.

Don't remember having to clone the SH Mac address when setting mine up, simply change option to modem mode and connected all cables and job done.

Ongoing update.

Ongoing, no sign of latency issues yet. The last few days on the SH1 showed latency coming in after just days. With SH2, nothing so far. The spikes in the above are when I downloaded a few tens of GBs.

Power levels are still in the -0.xx range for every channel. Super stuff.

I'll add one more update in a week or so and if it stays like this then I'll call it evens and be happy :)
