*** Nexus 5 THE Official Thread ***

Just tried it, you need access to the internet no matter what by the looks of it.

Sure it'll work with 2G though would likely just be slow.

I just downloaded offline speech recognition in settings -> language and input -> voice search and it will recognise my voice with wifi and data turned off and call contacts!

Think yourself lucky! The people I work with can barely make a phone call ;) all I get is "what you want that for.... It's meant to make calls, people should talk not this text messaging rubbish"

I elected not to fire up gta ;)

Well you can add me to the list of people that are seemingly having issues with the mic on this phone :(

I ordered a black 16gb model from the play store on December 30th and received it yesterday. I was really happy with it up until earlier today when i used it to make my first couple of calls. Both people i phoned were really struggling to hear me, to the point where the conversation was pretty much impossible. One person said it sounded like i was underwater and the other said it sounded like I was in a cave. Initially i thought it was maybe just a bad signal or something so i wasn't too worried. Fast forward a few hours and I've just read the last few pages of this thread and saw the video's posted with the sound problems so decided to record my very first video. The audio is absolutely terrible, I'd say even worse than what others have posted. It sounds like a permanent gale force wind blowing into the mic even when I'm in a silent room. I have tried holding it in every way possible but nothing changes :( Also did a factory reset which didn't help.

Its a real shame because other than that it's the best phone i have ever used. The build quality is great, screen is amazing and this thing just flys compared to my old Galaxy S3!

It looks like i will be sending it back but i will certainly be sticking with the nexus 5. My main concern now is will i get another faulty handset? I have seen several people saying they have received faulty handset after faulty handset :(
So... just to follow up from my previous post.

I emailed Google on Saturday morning and within 40 minutes i had a reply telling me they would send me a new handset once I'd emailed them my IMEI number. They were really great to deal with, i couldn't have asked for better customer service to be honest.

My replacement handset arrived this morning and it has the same problem :( The static noise isn't quite as bad as my previous handset but it's still there and still unusable when it comes to recording video. I haven't made a call on it yet but the fact the video recording is the same already lets me know that i can't keep it.

I recorded a video with both handsets at the same time, one in each hand. My newer one definitely has less static than the other one in the exact same conditions which makes me think it's a hardware fault and not down to the software as they're both running 4.4.2

I dunno what to do now :( do i try yet another replacement or do i go for something else. I do love this phone but this is starting to get a little silly. For the record my first handset was S/N 311 and my replacement was S/N 312.

Does this phone actually record audio fine for anybody when it comes to certain conditions? Having tried various situations it seems the static is worse when either recording in a silent room or if something like a tv or radio is on in the background. I'm certainly not doubting those folks that say theirs is fine but try recording a video with a tv on in the background at a normal volume and see if you can hear any static or popping sounds. Whatever the problem is it appears to be pretty widespread when looking around various forums and websites.

Very impressed with Google, very unimpressed with LG.

The static will be there on every handset. Under certain situations normally when picking up low frequency noises like a TV or radio that are not right next to the phone. I am 100% sure that all handsets are effected in certain scenarios.

I haven't met anyone with this phone yet! Showed people in work this morning and they were amazed at the phone :p

well it's not a well known brand to the masses

for example how many people out there have a moto g or a nexus 4 which are also really amazing phones for the money?

people either go for what their friends have, whatever's popular (iphones) or what they see tons of adverts for on tv (samsung/iphones).

it's also extremely hard to educate people as to what is better due to the power of media, social marketing, etc. i bought my dad a tv for him as he is clueless about technology, yet since it wasn't the same as all his mates extremely bright dynamic set LCD's he thinks it's worse even though it's far better reference quality set which cost him a 1/3rd of what their sets cost.

Franco Kernel R30, Stock ROM, Greenify hibernating anything except anything which i require push notifications for. Rooted

Screen brightness set at 15%

Is this pretty good results? If so awesome :D

Greenify is a horrible app I found in the past, I prefer to set all emails to just check once an hour for new mail. I also only install apps I actually use and regularly clear up apps I don't so no bloat eating up data/battery in the background.

I'm also on Franco Kernel and Stock with brightness set at auto and I am now getting 1.5 days of normal use before it was usually 1 day. I have also undervolted by -50mv and set the throttle temp to 60C instead of 70C to stop the phone from getting hot to handle when under a lot of use, even when throttled the phone is so powerful you notice zero slowdown.

I would set brightness at auto but tbh i don't need it. I can see the screen fine on low brightness its a nice screen. Undervolting.. How do you find out how much you can undervolt your device? Im on PVS2 and guides on XDA seem to suggest this is about a run of the mill in silicoln lottery and it won't do much in terms of overclock or undervolting etc.

consensus is most will only do -50mv maximum, i tired mine at -75mv and it started crashing, rock solid at -50mv.

i think any chip should do -50mv fine only really rare chips would do more than that if any.

The static happens in every single video though, no matter what. :( It just seems worse when it's either completely silent or in a room with a tv/radio on. I have tried the phone indoors, outdoors and also in quiet and noisy environments and I'd estimate there is static for around 95% of the video, every single time.

I think I'll contact Google and try one more replacement but I'm already expecting it to be the same. I've just tried a voice recorder app on both handsets and the sound is crystal clear with no static. I'm not sure if that uses a different mic but it has me even more confused now.

Jealous of those of you with a good handset! :(:D

Is it a much noticeable difference may i ask in terms of battery life and performance

@Poster above me.. All of them have static on the mic/video to a certain extent although im aware some are worse than others. Mines very very little never enough to bug me considering i never use video. My voice is crystal clear though on phonecalls

dont bother, they have not found a fix you will have the same issue if you rma.

I recorded something aiming directly at the tv with mine and the recorded footage had a nasty purple tint to it. Not sure why, my iphone recorded it fine!

I'd keep it if it weren't for the god awful hissing - I use my phone a lot for odd videos.... my two year old tends to do some amusing things when I'm nowhere near my slr/digicam.

no difference in performance because your undervolting not underclocking ;)

as for battery life there should be some difference how noticeable it is would be impossible to measure accurately, i undervolted for a couple of reasons one of them was to decrease temperatures because the phone can get hot at times so every little helps, increased battery life was the other.

it's simple to do using franco kernels official paid for app two little taps and then another in the previous screen to load settings on boot (make sure yours is stable before setting it on boot, i usually test for 1 full week and if i get reboots/crashes i know it's not stable).

i managed to undervolt my nexus 4 by a lot more i think it was 100-150mv which is 2-3 times as much.

Much appreciated Psycho :) Just changed my cheapo screen protector to the Spigen crystal one 100% better its full coverage doesnt have an issue with my case like my previous one did. Dust free and bubble free :D Im thinking i may need a new case already haha, Got the SPG Ultra Hybrid at the moment iv looked at slim armour but can anyone recommend any others? Must have all round protection and cover buttons too
