Rice cooker?

Anyone who thinks they can make decent fried rice using pan-cooked rice is dreaming :p

Nice inflammatory post there dude :)

I'd argue that once your fancy machine-made rice has cooled and then you've fried the crap out of it then you're gonna struggle to see the difference between a decent pan-cooked rice and some made in an expensive machine.

I can accept that there is a place for rice machines, but I think what surprised me most about the thread is that you decided to buy a uni-tasker appliance to cook a single ingredient slightly better, when you say you don't have enough room for something as versatile as a microwave. Furthermore you didn't bother to try any of the many more reasonably priced ones (which seem to be good enough for most of the Asian community) and headed straight for the top of the range one.

This thread sort of reminded me of this article that I read the other day.

Surprisingly, you do notice - and I understand it to be mainly about what happens (or doesn't) to the starches in the rice when cooked in a rice cooker over a longer period of time than in a pan.

It is substantially better, and doubles as a steamer (and, in the future when I get a Codlo, a sous vide machine).

Why waste life? As you can see from this thread and plenty of Amazon reviews, the cheap ones that are available in this country are a waste of time. The cheaper ones possibly not, but I did my research and Zojirushi consistently satisfies and are by far the most popular, including in restaurants. Further, it had the smallest footprint for its capacity.

Don't quite understand why anyone needs the internet in their homes. Everyone better unplug and stop wasting money on things they don't need right away!

Rice cookers are amazing, as is this thread, which has everything:

- Just use the microwave
- Wot can't you use a pan m8?
- Admonishment for buying an expensive one
- Comparisons with expensive watches
- Once fried you can't tell anyway
- You might want it, but do you NEED it?

Don't know why I'm surprised though. Some people question convenience whilst forgetting that it rules every aspect of their lives.

Must be all the op could do not to become abusive tbh!

Yup, well summarised :p

When I eventually get my new kitchen in I will be getting a decent rice cooker

I don't mind spending a few quid on something I can just fill up and leave

Fancy curry for dinner? Fill the rice cooker up and set it off, meanwhile make the curry.
What's that? it's taken longer to make the curry because gran phoned and kept yapping for an age, lucky the rice cooker knows how to keep the rice warm without destroying it

Heh

You can't compare the 2 because they are totally different purchases.

I can when I only see it with 1 criteria...

Expensive watches are a waste of money (from a practical perspective), it's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Of course you can't when you start seeing it as a luxury item, which I acknowledge, hence I said originally looking at it from a practical perspective only.

The point was above convenience, people buy things for convenience and a bit of luxury.

Sooo

No one here uses a pressure cooker?

Rice, boiling water, 5 mins.

Got a 6L Prestige hidome and aside from rice it can do basically anything requiring boiling just a lot faster.

Not sure on what your point is? It's a discussion forum and there was a discussion, why would he need to get abusive?

Those using a cooker when cooking white basmati how long are you spending rinsing the rice first? If you don't rinse it enough does it end up sticky once cooked?

Anyone that's into their rice more than me what is the difference between them taste wise? Basmati, long grain, Thai? Is their any taste difference and do the more premium brands like tilda are they worth the money over supermarket ones. I bought the teal rice cooker and just trying a few batches at the moment, I couldn't warrant 200 for the import cookers.

I don't think Tilda is worth it over supermarket brands, but I'd never go for the 'easy cook' stuff. I usually get Waitrose own basmati rice.

By Thai rice I think you mean Jasmine rice, and they're worlds apart. Jasmine is shorter, sticky rice and tends to hold moisture much more than Basmati. Basmati is longer in the grain and has a fluffier texture (holds less moisture).

Nutritionally they are similar but Jasmine rice (and most sticky rices) have a higher glycemic index*than longer grain rice. Make of that what you will!

I have one of these and it gets used a couple of times per week. Makes perfectly fluffy rice and holds it at temperature in case you're not ready for it.

No issues with burning on the bottom or anything like that.

And yes I can confirm that:

- I do have a microwave
- I can cook rice in a pan
- I don't necessarily need a rice cooker... but am glad I bought this!

I was looking at this exact model earlier. Interesting that it's quite versatile and can also be used as a slow cooker. I mentioned a rice cooker to my wife earlier and she's quite keen on trying I out once we move somewhere with a bigger kitchen.

Was looking at this one too - in fact, I had it in my shopping basket at one point but had a load of other stuff to buy (gearing up for getting the veggie patch organised for this year). It gets good reviews and now has an OcUK forums endorsement. This may well be in my next batch of Amazon purchases.

This was my second choice! Do you find it easy to clean? Some of the reviews said it is a bit an issue.
