Put it in gear, or this happens:

Someone from the building across didn't put his in gear, colleague walked out to that blocking the doorway. Managed to smash two huge heavy planters too.

I only tend to park in gear on a slope, but always check it's in neutral before I drive. It's 2nd nature.

On one occasion I was getting into a friend's car. He'd parked against a wall so I had to climb over from the drivers seat. As soon as I sat in the drivers seat I checked the car was in neutral, much to the friend's amusement.

EDIT: When I first started driving an auto it took me a little while to get used to not being able to get in and waggle the gearstick from side to side.

Out of gear unless on a steep hill. As for the clutch, I have to press it to start the car.

Park out of gear live on flat land, If im on a hill ill leave it in gear for peace of mind

Have to push in clutch to start mine for some odd reason

Always in gear and don't normally bother with the handbrake. As I leave it for at least 5 days at a time in can cause the back discs to be sticky if I use the handbrake.

My girlfriend also does this as the drum brakes on her polo seem to stick easily.

oh here's one.... my mate only uses the hand brake when on a hill and always parks in gear... so if she's on the flat she will only put it in gear.... no hand brake o.O

think the logic behind was,
1. sketchy hand brake
2. stop gyppos stealing it

:p

I have a button to start and I need to be pressing brake to do so....but oddly it also works if I just press the clutch while hitting start, which is what I'm used to doing now.

Therefore, doesn't matter to me if it's in gear or not :P

I dont put it in gear, but regardless of that I depress the clutch when starting the car

e: unless on steep hill

This.

I did once forget to depress the clutch and my girlfriend had left the car in gear... Embarrassing when I had a car full of friends in the car who hadn't been driven anywhere by me before!

As my wife parks on the drive anywhere from half a metre to 5mm from the front of the house, leaving the car in gear is just asking for one of us to bounce the car off the front wall when starting it.

And the problem is?

well...suppose it's that the handbrake is there to be used xD

suppose there's nothing wrong with it really as it's next to zero strain on the gears on the flat... just the first occurrence I've heard of it so was like....whhaaaaaa???? o.O

oh, was quite funny then when she was learning to drive, went to take her in my car just up and down her street (she wanted to drive it quick before going out for our lesson in her car) and I put the handbrake on (as I had just parked up and getting out with engine on), jumped out, we swapped seats, told her that she hardly needs any gas as the diesel will just pull it and to go on when ready... back pulls down and stall..... she assumed the hand brake would be off xD oh my my :p I did have a good chuckle :)
