Jailbreak ATV3

Well my ATV2 arrived £120 off eBay

Done the untethered JB and installed XBMC via putty and everything appears to be working perfectly..

Will have more of a play at home later!

Got the ATV3 for Xmas and have gone the iTunes Home Sharing route, ripping my DVDs and blurays to my main PC. Bought 3 x 3TB WD Red drives and put them into a parity space, have about 5.5TB usable space. Use a free WOL app on the iPad to wake up the PC remotely, and the ASUS Cloud app to wake up when mobile. Seems to work really well, using Handbrake and MetaX to do the encoding/tagging. Have started looking at DVDFab to rip 3D blurays, but existing 1080p 3D movies play well to it.

Really happy with it and wish I'd started this years ago! Might get a 2nd ATV3 for the bedroom and decommission the DVD player :)

Only thing is it would be nice to not need to login to Windows and open iTunes in order to start playing content, which a JB would sort, but its a minor inconvenience.

You might want to take a look at PlexConnect over on the Plex forums, it allows you to have a full Plex client experience on an ATV with no jailbreak ;)

So has the ATV3 been jailbroken yet?

No.
PlexConnect essentially does a man in the middle attack on the trailers app and instead serves up the ATV with specific XML/javascript to provide a full Plex experience.
We use the same code that is used in the native apps so it works really well.
Apple did try and spoil the party by changing the trailer app to SSL but is is easy to create a self signed cert and install it on the ATV.

Still working OK on the current firmware for ATV3? Might have to ditch the JB'd ATV2 and get a couple of 3s if so!

Working better than ever, it even has some nice client specific support like trailers for each movie.
Will get some decent screencasts up in the not too distant future.

I heard Plex still requires a user to login and run the tray app in order to serve the ATV?

I like the look of Plex, especially the exposure to internet connected devices.

^^^ Yep, the only thing that turns me off Plex is having to run the client from a computer. That (and the file format restrictions) are what turns me off using iTunes.

I've currently got XBMC on my ATV2 and I'm using Nplayer on my iPad to AirPlay video to my ATV3 depending on where I want to watch the video content.

plex is pretty awesome.

i have a n54l server with plex server installed and it serves me lovely.

6tb or drives in the server.

i have

JB ATV2 in the front room running plex.
Nowtv Box (£10) in the bedroom running plex
plex app on 2 x iphones and 2 x ipads

plus ive shared my server with my brother in law (his own account/login) so he can either use an app or the web interface to stream films/tv.

You're my twin. :D

I'm quite happy to just run my ATV3 as designed as part of the Apple ecosystem. Works perfectly for me in conjunction with iTunes, but thats probably because my iMac is on 24/7 anyway. I like the fact that all my movies are already in the correct format for the iPad or iPhone so if I'm going on the train I can just grab anything knowing it doesn't need to be converted first. I would like a spottily app though.

Plex will auto covert it for you if you select a film/episode to synch with your device; you can also do this remotely away from home and set TV series to eg always synch the last 3 episodes or other rules.

Wow, I didnt know this and I use Plex with my 2 ATV3's and my iPad/iPhone. So I can sync media down to my phone/pad for offline use in the Plex app?

Edit, just tried it and works great, thanks!

plex is pretty awesome.

i actually have an imac with the plex app on also.

the nowtv box for a £10 was one of the best additions. if it had an ethernet port i would swap the atv2 for one.

ive toyed with the idea of selling the atv2 and getting a roku3 instead (atv2 crashes quite regular)

in fact. someone might be able to help. i want to start my atv2 from fresh again. is the most recent ios for the atv2 jail breakable? i didnt save any blobs when i did it years ago.

Couldn't say to be honest as I've not actually owned ATV, Roku or NowTV box!

I've got nas4free on my n54l, is that what you run?

I've not tried setting up the plex media server on the n54l itself, I run the server and plex both from an old MBP hooked up to my TV (just connecting via ethernet do an afp share).

It's a great bit of kit. I tried XMBC on a Pi but that was a pain in the ass.

I have xbmc on the atv2 and that works good too but I prefer plex.

My atv2 has a really old firmware on it. Probs 2 years old firmware.

My n54 is running whs11. I tried all the free variations but couldn't get them to play nicely.
