Im relatively new to putting together pcs so please bare with me.

i've just an ASRock Z77 Extreme 4-M motherboard and I'm trying to work out where to plugin my SSD, Normal HD and DVD drive. There was a sticker on some SATA ports saying "for better performance and short boot up time we suggest you connect the HDD on SATA port 0-5 as boot device"

The thing is none of the ports seem to be called "0-5". They are called

SATA2_2
SATA2_3
SATA2_4
SATA2_5

SATA3_A1
SATA3_A0
SATA3_1
SATA3_0

I have no idea what one to use for the SSD, my normal HD and my DVD drive.

Anyone able to help. sorry for being an appalling noob.

It means putting it in one of the first 6 ports. :p

I would stick the SSD in one of the SATA3 ports and the DVD/HDD in the SATA2 ports.

The ports marked A0 and A1 are ASmedia controller SATA Ports.

The SATA3 ports not marked with an A are chipset controlled (intel).

You need to use the Intel ports.

Sata3_0 and Sata3_1 for you're SSD and HDD (HDD does NEED to be a sata it may just help a little)

DVD drives aren't affected by SATA speed.

cheers. ok.

should i attach the heatsink fan to the left of the heatsink or the right ?

You need to turn your cooler 45 degrees, then put your fan on the right side, facing the front of your case. And make sure the fan is on the correct way round, so it sucks air into the cooler.

if i turn the cooler 45 degrees and put the fan on the right side won't the fan end up facing downwards ? is that not bad for air flow ? Im not even sure if i can mount the cooler to the motherboard in the way you suggest ?

I did`nt think I had posted that comment, when I looked at what cooler you had. So just ignore it.

ok, it has front panel inputs for mic and speakers though, so if i want to use them i need to connect this cable, just not sure whats better. HD audio or AC 97, i assume HD Audio (sounds better lol)

If you use them, then just connect the HD Audio. I never use them myself.

both are same regarding audio quality

all that's different is hdaudio has jack sensing,it detects when you plug headphones/mic or rear speakers in

ok thanks.

well i have everything plugged in and i just turned it on for first time and the computer won't boot up.

the fan on the heatsink kicks in but i never get any image on my monitor and the computer constantly turns itself on and then back on again after a short while, like a loop.

Any ideas ? everything seems to be plugged in ok

did you put the memory in the second and fourth slot from cpu socket to front of case?

using onboard graphics?

No picture from either onboard or GTX 680. here is how my memory is positioned
