Having a bit of a nightmare putting new pc together, pls help

its something simple, the flexing of the board can cause it sometimes, ive had it happen

cooler too tight
bent pins
motherboard flexing

one of those imo

rare it to be the actual board but not to be ruled out

EDIT: remember a working board will boot from any ram slot with just one ram stick installed in any of the four slots

I had a similar experience, whereby the mobo would only boot with only 1 stick of ram showing. It turned out I had bent a couple of pins when putting in the Cpu. So very carefully I straightened them back up and all was good.
So, if I was you I would remove the chip and check for bent pins, hopefully this wont be the case.

Seems you done so already. Good.:D:

I was checking to make sure that it was compatible thats all, something i have over looked twice i wasnt insulting or trying to insult your capability of building a computer :)
this could be a number of things and its going to be a process of elimination...
whats the others have sugested are good starts! if it doesnt boot with the GPU not connected its probably down to the basics on the board, make sure everything is connected and tight! also make sure that nothing is shorting, i think you did mention that the cpu cooler does power so the fail safe for temp can be ruled out. probably looking to update the BIOS? or try booting with a OS disk in the optical drive

what way up should these heatsink screws be screwed on ? with the smaller raised bit pointing upwards or downwards ?

i've currently got them so they are like this (see below), maybe thats wrong ?

actually i think there are a couple of bent pins on the motherboard cpu bit

bugger, possible to fix ?

You need to very gently push the pins back so they align with the other pins. You may also need to push them up a bit. But be very careful not to touch the other pins.
I just use a toothpick, but a large sewing pin works well, especially if you can make a hook on the end.

ok well gave it a go and promptly came to the conclusion that this is completely impossible to do, its near enough impossible to even see the singular pins let alone work out if you are bending them in the right direction.

Should have mentioned you need a good magnifying glass or just use your camera/mobile.

three I can see,get yourself a big magnifying glass and a fine sewing needle and tease/pull them back into place, dont mess with them too much as they will just snap off without warning, then you might aswell throw the board away as an rma will be refused

tried to bend them back, looks a bit better but still same issue, sigh. annoying as i can't even proper diagnose what the issue is. how likely is it to be the pins, they weren't that bent

Its those pins that are causing the memory issue, even slightly bent can cause it,if I were you I'd try rma

yeh think thats what I'm going to do, out of interest can they cause other issues in the future ? say I'm so lazy i can't be bothered to send it back and instead just use 1 stick of ram (buy an 8gb one for example) should everything be ok or will the pins cause other issues as well ?

Not sure, but you'll only be able to run single channel ram mode, which would hinder performance

See what they say about rma first
