Benefits Street

Anyone notice if you head down the street, there is a ford transit with a cage on the back? No that is not for the residents (The Fail would really big that one up lol) If it is anything like the local council in my town, that vehicle is doing a local pickup of carp/rubbish. Would explain why the sofa's and odd bags of rubbish are hanging about possibly? Then again maybe its just somebody actually going to work lol, they caught wind the real camera's were coming sometime soon and bolted :D

That would most likely be the one featured in last night's episode, used by the Romanian scrap metal guys?

This may sound like an anti-immigrant loaded question, but it's not intended that way:

That family who were moaning about how bad England is and how it's better in Romania; why on earth do they come here then?!

I believe they were lured there under false pretences. Their 'boss' was related to gangs so would suspect they were told one thing and ended up in slave labour.

At the start I had your feelings towards them "why come to England" and then I started to think they've been lured to work on the pretence it's good money.

Edit: actually I re read your post and realised you were talking about the family near the start. Yes my statement above wasn't related to them.

Yeah I agree about the gang of labourers - felt a bit sorry for them really.

The first family just annoyed me though (most likely exactly what the producers wanted :p). Moaning that their gas and electric had been cut off because they obviously hadn't been paying the bills, and then moaning at their landlord about it?! Muppets! :p

Mrs put this on last night, i went to sleep. Load of drivvel. I lost interest as soon as that black lass opened her potty mouth.

Thing I learned watching last night was the the Roma sure know how to spin a sob story. I don't believe anything any of them said. I think the plan was always to end up sleeping rough in an affluent area of London - much richer pickings stealing and begging from rich Londoners than thick, lazy Brummies.

I like this show :)

It doesn't even make me hate the poor.

Most of them were quite decent folk really, all helping eachother out.

Felt really sorry for the girl trying to get off the drug's and get her kid back. It was sad to watch when the women put the phone down on her after she asked about her child, then she started to cry.

Shouldn't have taken drugs then should she? I mean you must have to be a pretty bad parent to get your kids taken off you if Mark and Becky haven't had theirs taken away. The argument in favour of compulsory sterilisation for some people has grown stronger in my mind.

Best thing about last night's episode was the Robocop remake trailer during the first ad break. Whoever decided to schedule a trailer for a film about urban decay and civil breakdown during Benefits Street got it spot on.

Just caught up with last night's episode. It left me feeling thoroughly depressed.

I can't help thinking about the whole 'it takes a village to raise a child' thing. In the developed world we've passed that responsibility off to the State, and I've no idea how social services even begin to tackle the range of (often self inflicted) problems on a street like that.

I flip between thinking we need to do much more to help avoid the social problems which are seeded from lack of guidance -- parental or otherwise -- and much, much less. It's no wonder our politicians struggle.
