8K - something interesting

Who said they don't last as long, and who said they are compromised?

This internet bickering is getting really long in the tooth.

When did you have an S2000? I honestly don't get why you think your B!W experience applies here. How is it bickering. You just disagree cause you think everyone wants a race car for the road. I'm basing my comments on what other S2000 drivers have said, some of those opinions I respect.

I think it's you with the bickering. You original said Bridgestones are great and what the car was designed on which I agree with, within 5 posts though you have changed your mind to AD08s. Often I get the feeling you like to disagree you for the sake of it.

You will notice many people think the AD08 is squidgy compared to Bridgestones, many people say the RE002 reminds them of feel the S-02 tyre too, the original tyre the car was designed to use. I can't see why you'd go away from this on an otherwise standard car.

I would like to see the OP still have the car in a year. Too many people get these and stack then in the first month. Putting on something like AD08 in middle of winter is hardly clever 'you dont have to be Einstein to know that'

What tyre are you running on yours m8 and how would you rate them on your car?

I know the S2000 will be quite unique when it comes to tyre, what might be great on a BMW or Porsche could be aweful on the S2000 as different cars like different tyres.

I'd say a safe bet would be Bridgestone RE050A or new RE002 you've mentioned, but like you say watch out in cold/wet as Bridgestones when I've had them were always poor in such conditions.

I'd say F1AS2 would be a good choice for road, just not sure how it is on the S2000, if it is good only potential weakness might be track use. I say this because some guys tried F1AS2 on E46 M3's and found it great on road, but for track use they melted and got ripped apart in a day, not to say this would happen on a different car of course.

I'd like to recommend SuperSports but not available, I'd recommend to Rich to pretty much go with what you recommend or S2Ki, you've had an S2000 for a very long time and no doubt tried a few tyre types and you've done track work. :)

Well, got the car yesterday. Will grab some pictures of it today.

The front tyres are shockingly bad. How they can confirm to any legal standard is beyond me.

I have done the sensible thing. The rear tyres are the RE050MZ variant and have loads of tread left. So I have ordered matching fronts. This was the sensible option IMO as they are the most used in the tyre thread on the S2Ki forum. The MZ version is the Honda OE fit tyre for 2004+ cars so I feel that it makes sense.

I would have liked to try the 002 but sadly they only make it in the size for the front wheels. Also, AS2 are end of life in the rear size.

I plan on getting some wheels for the car at some point. So will most likely get a set of AD08R to put on them.

Will post up some pictures and a few early impressions later today

few pics as promised...

Looks a cracking example, nicer condition than the one I had :)

Planning any mods? Gotta say I much prefer these with the little OEM lip spoiler.

Looking great Rich. :D

Definetely get the OEM lips and get the hardtop off, if you like it now, with that roof down you will be grinning from ear to ear. :D

Mods wise I found my VTEC engagement in both noise and pull was more pronounced with an AEM V2 CAI intake system and a catback exhaust system. The sound was truly amazing, probably no extra power though at top-end but better mid-range and more VTEC YO. :D

More power on these is hard and very expensive you can easily spend 3-6k for just 20BHP and hence it just makes more sense to supercharge them for same money and gain over 100 horses. :)

OEM lip for the front, replace front tyres [booked for wednesday] and get the geo sorted. after that, who knows. will run the car for a bit and see what i feel like doing.

I know little of S2000s, but that looks epic, enjoy :)

will see how things go. just going to keep it standardish for the time being. spend my money on some track time when the weather cheers up and learn to get more from it.

I have had a play this morning in the damp on an industrial estate. just learning what the car does with certain inputs and how it reacts to stabs of the throttle mid corner. Ideally I want to make it a little more predictable as when the back end lets go it feels quite controllable but the front of the car is ruined by those autoguard tyres. hopefully the new tyres will bring back the cars balance.

I got caught in a massive ice/slush storm today and the car didnt like it at all. but i took it easy anyway.

it wasnt a big storm or anything...

Looks great, but there are some odd posts in this thread.

Soft top = down if dry. In the 3 years I had my S2000 it was down just as much in winter as it was in summer. Theres nothing better than a long drive on a cool clear winter night, stars out around you, properly pitch black around you, heaters on full... its magical.

I'll agree with will. S2000 + tyres & geo as the absolute first thing you do if its on budgets and has an 'unknown' geo setup. I'm sure you did your research and know that you could have seized adjusters and this isn't cheap to fix if they are properly seized.

Use a reputable company to do the work (TGM in fleet, WIM in Chesham, CG up near ish to Birmingham) to ensure its done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Tyres wise... interesting different views in here. Its been over 3 years since my S2000 went, but I used RE050A's for the entire ownership period, which were the recommended Honda tyres.

They are... ok... in the wet and cold, but you absolutely must not try and take corners quickly until they are warm. On a damp road, you will end up in the hedge/curb/oncoming lane of traffic.

Most people who write them off come from CTRs/ITRs/other fast FWD's and seem stunned that a sensitive to tyres and suspension setup RWD roadster can swap ends so quickly.

Take your time, do a car limits day with Andy Walsh, do some track days. Take your time in bad conditions.

Enjoy the car, looks lovely.

They don't make much more peak with mods as the top end is good. If you think you really need more power you can get a lot more midrange. Although this is no good for pub chat

I've never really wanted for more power though.

I survived for 4 years without two. Just learn how to drive it and you'll live

Tyres would be the bigger issue in the cold, didn't matter what direction the wheels are pointing in if they have no grip.

Anyway enjoy and be careful. VTEC y0!
