Kim John-un is proving to be be more ruthless than his father, Kim John-Ian.
Unless I'm mistaken NK has one of the largest deposits of rare earth metals in the world along with numerous other metal and petroleum reserves. There are numerous reasons for the US not to want to get involved, but lack of natural resources wouldn't be one of them.
Not wanting to poke the crazy guy who has access to nukes and who shares a border with one of their allies is probably up there.
What do you propose doing? North Korea has a solid ally on the UNSC, a massive standing army, possible nuclear weapons and enough conventional weapons to level Seoul.
SK has very large armed forces and very modern equipment compared to the mainly Soviet era hardware that NK has. While NK can't be underestimated, SK has a considerable advantage in technology.
