Radeon R9 290 and 290X widely available, but at premium prices

Supply and demand...

Until the craze dies down nothing will change. If people keep buying AMD will continue to let it go on as long as they can keep to their due dates.

Crazy money for old hat though, but then you could say the same about GK110 ;).

Screwdriver? What did you do to it? is this like some horror story for GPU's?

I decided to reapply thermal paste at 3am drunk.

Needless to say you can quite easily take the heatsink by just cracking a big hole in the card where the screw used to be :(

Alcohol, Screwdrivers and GPU's don't mix well then?

Sorry man. :(

i hope amd does not make mining a priority over gaming or they wont care if the gpu plays games well or not as long as there selling, i just dont think its good in the long run but then i have as much intrest in mining as maggie thatcher

No, it seems AMD are not happy about this, lots of complaints about the situation, AMD are going out of their way to persuade retailers to drop prices to more normal levels, some how they have managed to get a US retailer to drop 290X prices from the hiked $900 down to $700.

I think they are concerned that ppl buying these GPU's at this price are the cause of Gamers having no option but to buy into Nvidia where they might have bought AMD. And they would be right.

I do notice OCUK staff aren't replying to this thread, quite comical when they are normally over everything to declare what a good job they are doing etc.

Personally this could be a major blow to PC gaming if you have to pay a litecoin tax on your upgrade then you will think twice about buying one and look for alternatives. Quite sad really.

This is the situation I find myself in.

I wouldnt worry too much about pricing, ASIC scrypt miners are coming online meaning it will no longer be worth the leccy to mine with GPU's until a new raft of algorithms come online, I can see 290's flooding the market in the not too distant future
