*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S5 Thread ***

People took the view that the S4 was "the same phone" as the S3, the S4 to S5 is actually a fairly small upgrade in comparison.

So far, Apple haven't stuck to the same design more than twice in a row (to this extent, anyway).

Having owned the S4 for about 5 months before selling it I won't be going to buy another any time soon. The software on these things ruins them. Much prefer the Nexus 5 I have now.
I read somewhere the S5 comes with 8GB already used up by the OS, is this true?

I think Samsung should've called this the Note 3 mini to save a lot of confusion. :p

It's the actual next generation of handset where we will see proper change I feel. 64bit.

So you'd consider the iPhone 5S 'next generation' compared to everything else? :D

The phase detection focus is an improvement but I'm not sure how beneficial that really is on a mobile device.

Phase detection shouldn't make much difference to for a camera with large dof. Maybe it'll stop focus hunting in low contrast scenes, guess we'll see how good this hybrid(?) system is soon. If it was ground breaking they would've made a huge song and dance about it (literally :p)

It's because the S4 (and in turn the Note 3) were so good that without a generation gap between them anything else feels like a small bump above everything else.

While the S4 was good, it wasn't a huge step up from the S3.
It was still a better phone but not a huge step up.

It was a nice update when I went from the S3 to S4. Was slightly more compact yet with a slightly larger screen and higher resolution, brighter screen etc. I'm not sure I'd go from a S3 to a S5 if that was the choice! Certainly not going from my S4 to 5.

The s4 at least massively improved the screen over the s3. What does the s5 have? Oh yes, a finger print reader that isn't particularly reliable. Great.

From now on I will only be upgrading my phone every two years.

This will be a good upgrade for people coming from the S3, that's about it...

That's me, however I don't feel any need to upgrade.

I use the internet a lot, play a few minor games (although have been playing a PSX emulator recently), and some other not very taxing things.

I don't feel that this phone offers me anything more than my current S3.

Also I want something that looks nicer when I do upgrade.

All that being said the Note 3 is tempting

Still in two minds about this though, my contract ends in may and do i go for the S5 on a new two year or just buy outright and just buy a sim package.

£37 a month on S3 i would say its going to go over £40-45 for an S5 :(

Buy a sim only deal and buy the phone separately.

I pay £15 a month for my sim only Three deal.
2000 minutes
5000 texts
Unlimited Data (inc tethering)

Over 24 months that works out as £360, add the £500 I spent on the phone would be £860 total.

Back when I was looking at contracts it was £50 for the phone and then £45 a month for a similar contract which is £1080.

It's the design that's putting me off.

Was hoping for a sleeker look, edge to edge screen and slimmer bezel but it looks far too similar to previous generations and looks dated already. That rear casing - what were they thinking! 16GB internal with ~half of that being used by the ROM isn't great news either.

Due an upgrade on my HTC One X in April and so far neither of HTCs or Samsungs offerings are making me want to upgrade. The Sony Xperia Z2 looks like it could be a great phone but will wait for reviews and opinions on that one.

The other route might be to get a cheap sim for 12 months and see what comes out next year or find a second hand Nexus 5 for 12 months. Come what may, I'm still happy with the One X.

Good stuff mate, good savings to be made :)

Anyone thinking of going for the S5 should just go for the Note 3.

It's a tad bigger, but you get a much larger screen, better looking design, 32GB Internal storage, 3GB RAM and the excellent Pen input.

And it'll be cheaper.

IMO - No Brainer.

It's still too big for many folk:

You might as well wait for a Note 4 if you want to go that way. It wouldn't surprise be if a new one appeared within five months.

The Note 4 won't get any smaller - and performance has pretty much peaked.

And Note 3 prices will be cheaper than the S5.
