Sanctions to hit part time workers

You cannot earn a living on minimum wage in some parts of the country. Some employers simply don't pay enough for people to live, so employees turn to the state to have their wages subsidised to cover their housing costs. Hence the tax payer covers the stingy employer, not that the employee is scrounging.

I didn't say the employee is scrounging. I'm saying many employees who work low hours only want low hours. E.g. my example above with housewives working for pin money. Or people at college/uni wanting extra money to fit around their course who are not able to accommodate an extra 5-10 hours a week.

More whinging from people who want others to pick up after them.

Everyone can afford to live on minimum wage, claiming otherwise is the snivelling of a spoiled first worlder.

The wonderful thing is that you can control how much you earn. If you don't like your current situation, do something about it.

Agreed.

That's what the zero-hours contract was intended (maybe? who knows any more) to be used for. Instead the flexibility it's offered has very much been a one-way street.

Are you saying that everybody can get a good well paid job?.

I don't think much of your racist picture, but yes I'm saying that.
Just lol.

Unless you are saying that some people are better than others?
I'm saying that our job market has a limited supply of jobs which pay above the minimum wage.

Not everybody can get a good job, this is factual. I also assume you mean "everybody can live in minimum wage" you are actually referring to full time minimum wage (which the post isn't about, this is about part time work).

What do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking?, unless you are a playboy billionaire I assume it's because you are stupid/lazy or just don't try hard enough? - which one is it exactly?.

Yeah but then they'd have to make the rich pay up, and they can't have that no matter what.

yea but there can't be much money to be saved here and someone has to do these jobs....

tax loop holes seemingly everyone rich is doing it and there must be a lot of money lost the treasury should be getting.

it's always the poor people they target

It's not about financial outlay, it never was. It's purely ideological.

Makes a mockery of the whole "supporting hard working people" rhetoric. I think what they meant was "supporting people who earn a lot". The idea that it's possible to work hard but not actually earn a huge amount is completely alien to a lot of people.

Easy to lol when you ain't ever been the victim of racism (not that I have of course). Insensitive.

That doesn't answer my question. If someone ain't happy with their lot why are they not doing something about it?

I do mind you asking because I find your attitude disgusting and your incessant internet arguing tactics annoying. Suffice to say that I'm constantly trying and succeeding in advancing my career. And I don't need to whine about how many handouts I'm not getting.

Oh god it's started

For some reason. I often wonder why it's impossible to state an opinion without career arguers like Elmarko coming to save the day.

It's a joke some people that that unskilled street sweeper should be paid the same as a skilled office worker

I guess we'll find out after the post-riot dust settles. There's only so far you can push people.

The man in the street will not truly rise up in this country. We have it easy (and we have X Factor as an analgesic). Frankly, when even councils are corrupt in minor (or major) ways, anything above is going to be riddled. But, as much as I like to dislike politicians, the problem lies in human nature. Those people that have the ambition and ruthlessness to thrust themselves into positions of real power will almost always be the wrong choices to lead.

I don't know if you missed a word out or what because it's not clear if you're in support of the idea of a person working in an office earning the same as a street sweeper or not. But it's hard to say if they are worth more without knowing what the actual job is. Not all office jobs involve particularly marketable skills at all - I consider the ability to wield a broom as much of a skill as picking up a phone and reading a script.

Why does someone who goes out and sweeps the roads and picks up litter not deserve to be able to earn a living wage from doing that full time? It's providing a valuable service that a lot of people are happy to claim they would have no objections to doing if they found themselves out of work. It shouldn't be possible to work a full time job for minimum wage and not be able to afford to live and travel to work without a subsidy. If it is then the minimum wage is too low.
