MSI 290/290X Gaming Edition Thread

Have the cards arrived yet Shanks?

No mate Monday, Silly me for got to add Saturday Delivery  From After I ordered I was reading Gibbo write up again and I missed the Corssfire part saying expect higher temps :( kinder has me worried now. I have searched all over the internet and can't find nothing with someone talking about crossfire with these cards.

My new MSI 290X Gaming is here! :)

The first was 90 degrees hot at almost 100% fan speed. The new one has only 82 degrees at 65% fan! In idle silently, under load audible but still pleasant. The MSI is the best card with 290X-GPU for me :)

The values are from BF3, Crysis 3, Metro 2033 and Heaven Benchmark. My case is a LIAN LI PC-X2000BN with 5x 140mm BeQuiet 900Upm fans.

Undervolting is also possible (-40mv to -50mv) and brings 4 - 5 °

Congrats, enjoy the card.

Under volting for the win. I managed a 10% overclock on both my 290's with -0.037v.

My 290X (stock) in heaven hits ~75C. Though I notice by default mine is on +13mv in Afterburner. It struggles in Tomb Raider, is it normal for it to go above 90C in Tomb Raider? I notice in BF4 it tops out near 80. (all at 1440p).

Worried I have a bad heatsink.

Inside the case (phantom 630, it's really cool with plenty airflow.).

GPU idles around 36-40C. With a video running it's around 49-50C

It's probably worth sharing a few temps/specs to see what people are getting, because either there's a massive variance in cards/chips, or there are a lot of people who think they have good airflow in their case and really don't.

I've got an MSI R9-290 at stock (no Afterburner, but +50% power in CCC) in a room that's currently 21 degrees C. At idle it's 36 degrees / 18 percent fan. Decoding TV, it goes to about 48 degrees / 23 percent fan. In Heaven or Valley, it's about 75 degrees / 53 percent fan. In heavy gaming I've seen it get to about 70-75 degrees.

I have all my case fans controlled by the motherboard, so they speed up as the temperature rises. I'm using a relatively cheap Antec 302 with three case fans and one on the CPU, all Noctuas.

I had a similar issue. Mine would idle in 50-55C region. When playing the likes of PlanetSide 2, Tomb Raider and BF4 at 1080p it would push 93C at 100% fan speed (Corsair Vengence C70), i RMA'ed it.

On top of that i would sometimes get random frame rate issues (i.e it wouldn't go above 20fps even on low settings) and had some serious issues reaching the advertised clock speeds.

When it worked it was great, i'm looking into a gtx780 now though. I use my PC for work and i cant afford instability. I'm currently rocking a GTX580 that i borrowed from a friend.

Received my MSI 290 yesterday. It's stable at 1100 & 1400 at stock volts. Also with Hynix VRAM. Max temp I get from benchmarking is 75 but with 100% fan speed it's around 69. Very happy with the card and rather quite at 100% fan speed!

yeh quiet is relative huh!
under60% id call it quiet aslong as u not sitting right next to it doubt you hear it at that

I have one good card one bad card, big difference
be nice to know if its bad luck on chips or quality control on the cooler or something

The guy on the right looks like a b grade dutch porn star. The sort that would come to fix your fridge and end up servicing your mrs at the same time.

Lol a definite porn star :) anyone know the dimensions of this new lighting as it must be bigger that the MSI 290x gaming edition

Hey guys, posted this on the official 290x thread but maybe will have more luck here!

I have a Gaming Edition which Ive been trying to stop artefacting at higher clocks. However, when I enable voltage control on afterburner, adding +50mV doesn't appear to stabilise the core at all to get above 1200. Then, as soon as I click apply when trying to go above +50mV on core voltage causes an instant black screen, without trying to add any more MHz.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Guys can someone please give me an idiots guide to how to stop my card from throttling? Using Afterburner I can see that my fan speed won't go up but my gpu will be all over the place :S

I think +50mV is too low for 1200MHz on the core clock.

As for black screen go above +50mV on core voltage causes an instant black screen, not sure about that.

First you need to check what is your base voltage. For example my 290X has around 1,06-1,06V load. For 1200 core, i need the full +200mV in Trixx which gives me around 1,25-1,26V under load. I'd need a tiny bit more to make it 100% stable.
Mine runs 1100 on +55mV, 1140 on +100mV

Second: It seem the Bs occurs because the card cant supply the core AND the memory OC at the same time it seems. I get BS if i try to go with 1200 core and above 1350 memory clocks. With 1250 memory, i can go higher on the core without BS.

Ah ok, makes sense, didn't think about dropping the mem clock at the same time.

Would people suggest a higher clock speed or memory speed?

PS will try dropping mem clock later today

the refund on my rma of a 7950 has cleared, thanks ocuk for helping me sort that. now to decide which 290 to get. its most likely gonna be the msi gaming edition but im waiting till 9am to see if there will be any daily deals before i order. this thread has been a big help choosing but if the tri x comes in at a lower price today i may grab it.

Make sure you check the clearances in your case - the Tri-X is very long. If it can't fit, the decision's been made for you.

Would go with the MSI myself, the 3 year warranty is a big plus in my book. Mine runs oc'd at 1000mhz and never goes above 68c on 50-60% fan speed, which is still fairly quiet.

MSI cards are superb, I have two. Crossfire though can become tricky with temps but if you have a motherboard that allows good distance you will be fine.
