'Contact lost' with Malaysia Airlines plane

First time I've seen this image with the satellite position mapped, which makes the arc make sense now. Interesting!

We don't know what happened and we don't have all the information so all we can do is speculate. One peice of info that I think would be interesting to know is the estimate locations of each ping as I assume it would give a reasonable idea of it the plane was flying or had landed somewhere (I say landed not crashed as from reading here the engines have to be running). Pure speculation but it does leave the possibility that there is something there that they don't want publicly known at this time.

You can't have an estimated location of a ping, you can have an estimated distance from the satellite of a ping.
That's what the picture above shows, the red line, is the estimated position via distance from the satellite of the final ping.
Any earlier pings would prescribe long arcs as the last one does.

If there's one thing I would put money on, it's the fact that there are people higher up who do know what happened. But the information is not for the public to know at this point, or ever.

It's a bit pedantic to argue the difference of my 'estimated locations' and your 'estimated position'. I didn't clarify my position as being on the line but thought that was a given. Though either way, it would be interesting to know the estimated arc locations for each ping to know if the plane was flying or not. Better?

I am not sure I would go as far as to say someone does know, though it is a safe bet someone higher up knows more than we do but that is always the case in the scenario's.

Oh look, Diego Garcia again. Seems to be a bit of a trend with this.

The only way it could land at Diego Garcia is with US permission. It's a massive US comms hub with naval and air force presence. It would be seen from a couple of hundred miles away on primary radar and then you'd get an F-16 up your jacksy.

Yup, Assuming Diego Garcia has anything to do with it then it means either;
1 - Terrorist attack on Diego Garcia but some reason the plane didn't make it so it ditched into the sea.
2 - Americans spotted it and either couldn't raise comms or didn't get a satifactory response and shot it down
3 - It landed with American approval meaning the Americans wanted something or someone that was on the plane.

Number one and two I could believe (though think unlikely) and number 3 I would need my TFH to believe.

I would reject 1 & 2 because the miscreant clearly shows a good knowledge of primary radar and transponder comms. Such careful planning to minimise radar contact during the hijack without having considered the same issues at the target... a US base ? From the sublime to the ridiculous. I don't buy it.
