290x or GTX 780ti

I've had both. Prefer the GTX 780ti. Imho it's worth the extra.

Have to agree, the 780ti is such a better card ihmo. The r290x is decent 'bang for buck' card, but that is at the cost of it running a lot hotter and the fan spinning up a lot louder to try and keep it cool. Even with a decent fan curve, it'll run into the 90's easily with demanding games.

I went from a MSI Gaming 290x to a reference 780ti (now two). Even with SLI, both cards are much cooler and quieter than the MSI Gaming r290x.

If I go with the GTX 780Ti iChill , would I be able to SLI them with a 1000w power supply and a Maximus hero mobo?

Or would I not have enough space/power

Defo go for reference 780tis if you plan to go SLI, the cooler is very impressive and the heat that they dump out of the case will help save on your heating bills. Seriously though, the reference 780ts are fantastic and are a must if you plan to SLI on air.

!000w is fine for SLI.

well i wouldnt recommend the 290x, the 290 i would
as a single card the tri-x is as quiet as any nvidia i have used
unless you have no case fans at all i dont think you hear it at 40%

there is a chance your msi was faulty
i had one that ran hot and one that didnt

You can get this Sapphire TRI X 290 card for £320. That will be as fast as a 290X (if you overclock it to 1050/1250 - which it will do easily) and comes with the best air cooler out there in the 290 range.

i would get that card. reviews have been great:

The temperature and acoustics are fine, and the only criticism was the price at launch was high. The OP should read the reviews.

The R9 290X and GTX780TI are not worth the price premium for the performance increase(well maybe if E-PEEN is a consideration though).

MSI 290X Gaming is now £400 with 5 games (should fetch £30-40 on ebay) leaves you with a 290X for £360 ish

I've had a couple of different MSI gaming cards and they're that loud at all, 90% fan speed locked in and under full load the card doesn't go above 80 degrees C.

I've not had a 780ti to compare it to, but they're completely different price brackets anyway.

You can also get the PowerColor PCS+ 290 which has a slightly better cooler than the Sapphire and comes standard with the highest clocks. 1040/1350 and can be had for the same price. Already faster and cooler than a stock 290x.
