Heard on the news tonight that Putin stated two weeks ago that he would not annex Crimea, today he did.

Today he also stated that he has no interest in going into the Ukraine. I hope the fact that he stated it in an address to Russia and the World means that he means it this time.

Imagine that, leaders breaking promises.

The west actively set about destabilising two governments in Libya and Egypt for their own ends and now they get all sanctimonious about Russia's actions.

You couldn't make it up.

I have a different memory of events, I'm pretty sure that Libya and Egypt were already destabilised by the time any military action by "the west" was taken. It takes the west two weeks to decide to hold a meeting about a humanitarian crisis somewhere in the world, in two weeks Putin annexes part of Ukraine.

Former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili just made the same point on C4 news, and criticised western diplomats for constantly thinking that Putin means what he says this time.

I think we can all agree the 'crisis' is over.

From BBC Live Text:

20:01: Crimean police say an inspection of the scene of shooting in Simferopol (see 19:13) shows that the firing came from a single location and was aimed at both the local defence forces and the Ukrainian servicemen, Interfax-Ukraine news agency reports. One Ukrainian serviceman and one member of the Crimean self-defence forces was killed and two others were wounded.

Troubling news if true, implies a third party trying to stoke up a fire and spark conflict...

Well given that the Ukraine chaps have now been given permission to shoot back, they better be clear who made the first shot, otherwise, poop and fan comes to mind.

We mind end up getting the "Well that escalated quickly" jpeg out soon!

Russia does it, invasion - we do it liberation.

Force attacks a government we like - terrorists, force attacks a government we don't like - freedom fighters.

Whilst you normally talk sense I think you've got it a little bit wrong here.

When was the last time we took a country with the intent of permanent occupation?

Force attacks a government we like - rebels, force attacks a government we don't like - rebels.

Terrorists are a completely different ballgame. Sadly freedom fighting/rebellion can lead to those involved becoming terrorists through their actions.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The only act of war so far is the sanctions.

If Scotland wants independence then they should be able to try and vote for that if that is what the people want. If Scotland wants to join the EU then they should be free to do that and face the consequences.

How then is a part of Ukraine any different? If they want to join Russia instead of the EU then that is their choice.

Putting aside the rights and wrongs of the whole Crimea situation the whole thing shows what a complete and utter joke the West are. I'm sure the Russians are ******* themselves at the thought if another strongly worded condemnation. Sanctions these days are a joke in a global (largely) capitalist world as there always be a work around.

What happens when they decide they want another territory? Another country? It's appeasement akin to what happened before ww2 started. I'm not suggesting ww3 is inevitable but we know what appeasement leads too, more violence from one side.

The situation shows every country in the world can do what they want as the west is ultimately scared to act unless they are roflstomping a country who have 0 chance if even token resistance.

Absolute disgrace of a situation. Listening to the news now and William Hague is condemning Russia. I'm sure Putin gives a ****

Cowards.

Well it is a tricky situation isn't it...... They cant exactly take military action against Russia as that may very well mean the end of all life on this planet...

I imagine the rest of the world have been saying the same about "the west" for the alst few decades as we've willy nilly gone around over throwing governments and invading places.

I agree but instead they bend over, pull their pants down round their ankles and wave their behind infront of Putin?

Stick troops on the ground. No one wants war, Russia has seized the initiative by getting their first and knowing no one will escalate. Put troops there and the ball is once again in Russia's court as they don't want to push things to the brink either.

When was the last time we took a country with the intent of permanent occupation?

when did we last have a country that had a majority British population to annex?

also why would we need to occupy we just install a friendly government and do it that way.

Please read my post where I clearly state I'm not referring to past Western actions or even the rights and wrongs of Russia actions. I'm assessing the response and how you go about tackling clear provocation and brinkmanship.

but you should be thinking about past western actions as what did Russia do to us? did they sanction us or did they just let us get on with it?

only ones playing brinkmanship is the west not the east in this situation.

what exactly do you want us to do?

and equally what exactly do you want Russia to do the next time the uk gets involved in a military conflict?

Where, exactly? On the ethnic Russian speaking, Russian settled areas of eastern Ukraine? Does anyone think that they will welcome our troops with open arms and celebrations on the streets? They're more likely to come onto the streets to throw petrol bombs at us.

If you mean the ethnic Ukrainian speaking areas of western Ukraine then I don't believe Putin has any intention of sending troops there anyhow, personally.

At the same time those that got all sanctimonious about the West's actions in the middle east seem to be giving Russia a free pass, it seems the hypocrisy extends to both sides.

is it hypocrisy though? if they;re simply pointing out to others that we dont really have any reasonable justification for getting high and mighty especially as so far the Russians have taken steps to reduce deaths of all involved where as we actively supported people who saw civilians as targets and frequently killed civilians ourselves in strikes in major cities.

They have handled this much better than we did. and they have a much greater claim to legitimacy in this whole thing than we did.

but yeah we're all sons of bitches, lets just hope our greedy little side wins out over the other greedy little side.
