You are either in the right gear or the wrong gear.

If you are spinning too much then shift up. If you are pushing too hard then shift down (or stand up) until you are spinning sufficiently to sit down again.

The small ring at the front is for going up steep hills and the big ring is for everything else.

Simples.

Edit; congrats and enjoy. ;)

I think the main problem was, I didn't have my Garmin. I usually look at that and try to keep around 100rpm. This is the slowest afternoon ever at work :P

Right guys,

Weather is looking good tomorrow, want to get 100miles in, tempted to use my aero tubs from my TT bike, is this

a) stupid as I'll get a puncture

b) stupid using carbon rims with a normal brake block?

you don't want to be using rim blocks unless they are designed for carbon rims !

B) yes, very much so. Especially if you have been using them with alloy rims and have small bits of metal embedded in them.

Cool thanks, will see if I have time to get them swapped over this evening.

What about a) will I be unlucky and get stranded or be alright?

mmmmm skinny steel frames with big aero wheels <3

Every time i see an English frame i'm reminded of his TT bike - possibly the prettiest bike ever?

Until you go over an 'English' pot hole then it's arrrghh :D

Just wanted to let you know about a challenge 4 of us are taking on in May. We're going to JOGLE as a non-stop relay, riding in pairs. We're aiming for 900 miles in 60 hours. None of us are club riders and commuting is essentially the training we're getting.

And if anyone wants to help by driving the bus, please get in touch!

Help! I posted a few weeks back looking for a first road bike, I'm looking at starting a 10 mile commute to the office.

I'm hoping to spend under £400 and the Edinburgh Cycles 15% weekend offer has made me really tempted by this: http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/revolution-audax?bct=browse/bicycles/road-bikes

Sora gears, carbon fork - it seems just the ticket.

But then it weighs about as much as my trail bike, not being a road biker is that much of a problem?

An alternative is one of their CX bikes: http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/products/revolution-cross-14?bct=browse/bicycles/road-bikes

But that's got an alloy fork and lower spec gears I believe!?

A third alternative is the Felt F95 from Wiggle: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/felt-f95-sora-wiggle-exclusive/

Probably lighter with a good spec, is that the best option? Or will the other two offer a more comfortable less racer type ride?

Whereabouts? I'll be cycling around Hampshire tomorrow :)

I couldn't resist and did a quick zip round the village tonight. Only 5 odd miles, but such awesome fun. Overall incredibly pleased, I expected it to be a little uncomfortable coming from a hybrid, but apart from getting use to the weight difference it's comfy.

What time are you setting off? (on the 5th?)
I have a race on the sunday and work on the monday so i wouldnt be able to drive for you but, depending what time you start, you'll probably be passing inverness sometime late afternoon/early evening so i could maybe come out and be a wind block for a couple of hours if you're allowed that? :p

It'll just be the commute yes. Possibly guards yes, I'll probably take the car in the worst of the weather mind.

if your commuting on roads only, get a road bike, not a CX bike, just look for ones with have mud guard eyelets, most road bikes don't, so need to check the specs
