BMW warranty - Why do people purchase?

I have been paying for the warranty on my 335i for the best part of 5 years and not a single thing has gone wrong with it.

Having said that my first 911 had over £21k worth of work done under warranty.

Sods law that the week/month after you stop having a warranty all hell breaks loose :p

Modern cars are now so advanced and so complex that I think a decent warranty is part of the running costs now really.

Agreed.

I just factor it in as 'insurance', because that's what it is really.

Lucky! Since I bought my car from you 2.5 years ago it has had...

1 x HPFP
1 x Fuel injector
1 x VANOS exhaust solenoid
1 x Water pump
1 x Turbo wastegate actuators and vaccum reservoir.

This has all happened in the last 18months with a total cost of probably £1500 parts plus BMW labour of another £1500 at least

I think on the F10 £100 offers the best value.

Just looks at this now Fox.

For the F10 the options are:

No excess = £1159 a year
£100 excess = £886 a year
£250 excess = £679 a year

My initial reaction was just to get the zero excess, however if I went with £100 excess I would save money even if I made 2 claims a year. With £250 excess I'd save money with upto one claim a year.

How good is the warranty? I've noticed a switch with a crack in it, would the dealer cover that?

I'm also tempted to do a few months with zero excess and get any bits I find sorted then increase my excess before going over 60k.

I'd go £250 excess personally. I did it on my 335d before too.

Then again, if you do have some stuff to claim for, get zero excess initially, then bump it up.

Didn't realise the 5 was so much more than the 3 though.

On average I'm making 1-2 claims a year on my BMW Insured Warranty. The zero excess is useful if little things annoy you. For example, last time mine was in for a service I noted before hand that the illuminated ring around the rear 12V socket had stopped working. Was just replaced. It's 95p and I can't take that sort of financial impulse at once.

Any one know if a broken switch will be covered? The warranty says it excludes trim and switches but I've no idea how reasonable the dealers are. Looks pretty easy to DIY though.

I went back and couldn't find it.

Slapped the zero excess on, will get any niggles I find sorted then drop back to a cheaper option later.

Thanks :)

I've got a feeling my E92 335i might have the same issue. I've noticed a loud ticking/clacking noise coming from the exhaust when I start it cold but this goes away once I start driving.

Common 335 problem you speek of. Turbo waste gates both turbos will odds on need replacing and they are an absolute fortune to do.

I'm beginning to wonder if it the dreaded wastegates. It now makes a ticking noise from the exhaust when I lift off the throttle - is that a symptom?

When I mentioned the ticking from the exhaust at start-up to the dealer they had a look at it and said it was probably the butterfly valve in the exhaust and that a rattle couldn't be fixed under warranty.

It depends on how bad yours is, mine does it slightly when you rev the engine and the revs fall. They've had my turbos and wastegates apart, replaced the actuators etc but it is still there. They discovered that it was the wastegate actuator rods that goes through the turbo housing that vibrates ever so slightly. It is a very common problem with the N54 and it happens when the spindle rubs against the turbo housing over a period of years and wears down slightly to create a small gap, which then allows it to vibrate and rattle when resonated. I have no idea why they didn't replace them when everything was in bits, but meh.

BMW created a new part which increased the rod diameter from 6.0mm to 8.0mm to stop this. No idea when these were implemented from factory though.

In short, it doesn't affect the car, the wastegates or the longevity of the turbos and the only time you can hear it is when you rev the engine. Mine has done it since i got it 2.5 years ago and 30000miles ago and when the tested the turbos on the bench they said they were in excellent health.

I did try and get them to replace the turbos and wastegates but they refused as they were 100% on their diagnosis and 100% sure it would not leading to any kind of wear on the turbos. The technician said that he sees many N54 engined cars and unfortunately they all do them after a couple of years.

FWIW - it could also be the butterfly valve in the exhaust. You should be able to move them by hand and if they rattle around, it may be your answer. I assume you know about the "golf tee mod"?

Thanks. I don't think it's bad enough to go through the hassle of having it fully investigated at the moment, which I presume would involve having the turbos out?

I have already done the golf tee mod but the rattle still occurs.

Am I alone for thinking it is madness to spend that much a year on a run of the mill car?

If you consider it 'run of the mill' then no, it's probably not worth it to you.

Personally I find it such a crushingly competent car that I wouldn't consider it 'run of the mill' and would pick it over many more 'interesting' cars but I can see why people might think it's nothing to write home about.

These seem crazy high, are they made out of Swiss cheese!

Sadly the prices are done per model, so even though it's really no different repair wise than a 3 series the warranty on a 5 Series has always been almost twice as expensive.

The 7 series is even higher.
