Windows 8.1 Update 1 arriving on March 11

Windows 8.1 crapped out on me again. Downloads no longer work, they just stop and pausing and restarting does not work. Streaming videos has stopped working.. This has happened with every W8 release so far.

Back to Windows 7 once more. Will stick with 7 until W9 is out. Shouldn't be to long. At least W7 is reliable for downloading / streaming.

For it to happen so many times, it has to be a case of PEBKAC.

Haha, on 3 different systems now with any version of W8. W7 just works..

I'll stick with W7 until Microsoft remember the people with the Desktop PC's and release Windows 9. Looks like they are already changing things up to appeal to their actual bread and butter market.

No denying W8 has been an utter failure at this point. Less uptake than Vista at the same lifespan point and Vista was regarded as the previous worst failure. I've tried to get on with W8 many times now and it just doesn't feel like a complete package..

Much like W7 which ironed out the kinks of Vista and was a solid release. Windows 9 should come with all the bugs ironed out and a start menu back as default without the need for third party apps..

Hopefully..

(As I'm typing this on my new W7, downloads are actually working :D)

Downloaded and installed the KBs last night, only to find the new start menu isnt released yet?? Thats the only reason I installed the KBs in the first place. :-D

Here are the links to the official downloads from Microsoft and the recommended installation order. As with any major update you should make a Restore Point / Full Backup before installing.

1. KB2919442 - Servicing stack update. This is a prerequisite for the Windows 8.1 Update. It was released through Windows Update in March and so you probably already have it installed.

If you are doubtful that these are correct, genuine or final then the following official Microsoft instructions for OEMs should put your mind at ease.

Install the Windows 8.1 Update for OEMs

You can roll back fully with Restore or even remove 1 KB (retains fixes but not new looks) if you do not like it.

The last leak is RTM, nothing changed.

That doesn't answer the question :p
The last leak which was "RTM" (Supposedly) doesn't look like what they've shown at build, it's more a half way.

So, is the update on the 8th what was shown in build, or is it like the leak?

the leak/RTM/what is coming out on the 8th are all one and the same. they do not include the new start menu. there has been no mention on timescale for that to come out.

That's a bummer then.

I don't know why they're even bothering with the 8.1 update 1 really, it's a farsight from what they've shown at build, if anything it just leads to disappointment, it's a poor showing really.

They added that I assume and using GPEDIT enabled IE11 Enterprise Mode.

@ Keynote 90% of the time he talked about Tablets/Phones and the 10% of time left PC's, what does that tell you?

TBH I would not have seen it anyhow as ClassicShell retained its setting on my upgrade.

The Start menu is NOT a big deal, you really don't need it IMHO ,if you do either use a third party mod like Classic Shell,Start8 etc or be patient, its not the end of the world.
