Ok, I'm an atheist don't believe in the occult.
but the thought of Ouija creeps me out.

I know, ghosts aren't real.

Any experiences?

Only thing to be scared of is if it's made of wood and someone hits you with it.

If that's true then why do people bother doing it in the first place?

Whether you believe in or not, getting involved with the occult has had negative consequences for many people.

I've published an essay on this that sells quite well. Key points to remember regarding these boards:

  1. The ouija board is sold in the US, a law-suit-loving country, in children's shops. There's even a pink version for girlie sleepovers.
  2. Never has any solid evidence supporting the idea that it is a 'gateway' to supernatural forces been collated from ouija board use.
  3. Similar 'games' such as table tipping have been mechanically debunked.
  4. The ideomotor theory is proven to be at play during ouija use. Ideomotor effects can be startling.
  5. As is the not insignificant power of suggestion.

If you would like to read my essay then send me a trust message and I'll give you a link (as I cannot advertise here). Otherwise, I suggest readers search for the exploits of Washington Irving Bishop - a mentalist who used the ideomotor theory to great theatre. He's a fantastic character who died in unusual circumstances.

Not going to deny that.

But the effect is purely psychological, not mystical. When people honestly expect creepy stuff to happen, their mind fills in the blanks and provides it.

Essentially yes, from a rational point of view. At least, that's where my research led me. I have an open mind though, so if anyone reading can provide a balanced and objective counterpoint I'd be eager to read it.

However, I do think that it can have dark effects upon already-disturbed minds that choose to tinker with it, rather in the same way the a placebo can 'aid' those who think it real.

If that's what they're in to, then they're welcome to watch any time.
