The card may be AMDs flagship card but that doesn't mean its possible to game at 4k comfortable with all the shiny bits. Your interpretation of 4k ready is quite optimistic (especially considering the card is only ~£400). There are no claims that a single one can get playable frames on max settings at 4k.
An i7 wont help frames on a single 290x. If i switch off HT, i don't notice a difference with my single 290x even overclocked to 1280/1600. If you want to get more frames, i suggest you overclock your GPU or double up if you plan on snagging a new 4k monitor. Be warned though, in many games you will need to turn down settings so you don't get dips to unplayable frame-rates.
I'd be surprised if next gen Nvidea cards can solo 4k on ultra.

DX12 won't be out for at least another 18 months, and even after release, you'd probably be able to count the number of dx12 games on one or both hands.
To be honest, AMD card got Mantle to use right now, granted it's only on handful of games, but the 290x would support dx12 as well, so Mantle or dx12, it's a win-win situation.
Are you 100% sure that DX12 will work with the 290 series AMD cards? As I found no information on it at all.

It is so far away, i don't think it really matters considering you are planning at least one GPU upgrade prior to its release.

Clocking wise, I use Trixx since i am under water and appreciate the +200mv without the need for a bios flash. MSI AB is another option. Its relatively easy to clock, just raise the core and memory sliders and voltage appropriately and test using gaming or a gaming benchmark on loop (like Heaven or Valley) while keeping temps in check.
You will probably be able to do 1100 on core off the bat without need to touch voltage. If it black screens, the memory is not stable. If display drivers crash and recover, then usually the core is at fault.

The only way to max BF4 is with 4 290Xs and an i7
GTX 780ti's are not serious contenders for 4K if you go Quad SLI as they will run out of VRAM unless 6gb models are used.
OP grab another 290 and upgrade to an i7, this will get you close at 4K but you will have to turn down the settings in some things.
As for NVidia's new 337.5 drivers, if I was just using a single card I would not go near them as they are not that good. Their real benefits come from using SLI and more than 2 cards.

But I do agree, AMD will support DX12 too and the release of DX12 is still quite far away. Mind you so is Mantle.
I believe Microsoft did say that early versions would be available before they actually release (much like Mantle has been) so much like Mantle games may add in support earlier than the official release date (like they have been with Mantle).

I recall reading someone mentioning AMD confirmed it, and even Nvidia's own slides saying AMD's card that support Mantle/GCN will support dx12 as well or something.
I recall Nvidia was hyping up the % of how they have advantage over AMD because they have far more existing cards that would be dx12 compatable than AMD, but looking beyond the huge % number and putting it into context- 400 and 500 series would support dx12 by HD5000 and HD6000 series doesn't support dx12 suddenly it doesn't sound all that impressive, since GTX400 and GTX500 would be far too slow and lack of vram for modern games by the time of dx12's release, toward the end of 2015

For our overclocking test, we kept to stock voltages and were able to increase the core frequency to 1,115MHz, representing a 6.2 per cent jump. We struggled to maintain stability at 1,120MHz, but found room to manoeuvre on memory, where the 4GB GDDR5 frame buffer on our review sample maxed out at an effective 5,800MHz.

Heh, I think the 290x is a keeper then.
It only happens every so often, Small squares on the screen. When I run a window over them they go.
Should I still ask for a RMA?
By the time DX12 gets here hardly anyone is going to be using a 290X or 780ti apart from me, I like collecting old cards.
Clean out your old drivers use something like DDU reinstall new drivers if it still happens and your at stock then yes i would RMA it before i tryed overclocking it
