MSI R9 290X Lightning Critical Bug Can Cause Burned Out Cards – Fans Stop Working After Catalyst 14.

Don't know. I sent him the info and he did the rest and said he would give me a mention. I told me the article was live, so I copied and pasted.

Thankfully however, from what we can see in the forum responses at least, all owners noticed the problem quickly enough and stopped any GPU intensive activity while downgrading to a safe Catalyst version. It is worth noting here that the Catalyst 14.3 is a BETA driver and AMD has warned about bugs like this on practically every documentation available. However from a cursory glance this issue has been prevalent in even 14.2 BETA drivers. Here is the hierarchy of the problem:

Catalyst 14.3: Causes critical malfunction of side fans not functioning and middle fan locked at 30%. Manual override using MSI Afterburner or Catalyst Control Not possible. The result is almost certain damage to the GPU if it is put under continuous, heavy load.
Catalyst 14.2: Causes the auto feature to malfunction, resulting in the side fans not spinning up and increasing RPM when GPU is put under load. The result is inadequate cooling and overheating. Manual override is possible.
Catalyst 13.12: Everything works fine.

Right nothing as been change but you managed to jumble up the cut and pasting.

I think if i was a owner of said card i'd be glad of this being brought to my attn Greg imo you have done a good thing

+1

If there is a problem with the card that could cause damage the only thing you can do is make people aware.

Of course it is me and what is your point?

You should not be surprised and should have expected that people are going to think ulterior motive no matter your true intentions.

If this was MSI 780ti Lightning Critical Bug Can Cause Burned Out Cards i would not post it because i know what others would think but i may comment in the thread depending on other comments.

Thanks guys and regardless of what some people think, I am a fan of MSI and would hate to see them having masses of RMA's that could be avoided. They have not had the best run lately and the Lightning is a work of art for overclockers (I had 2 of them). At the same time, I would hate for users to get caught out and install these 14.x drivers and not realise the fans are not spinning.

@ Final8y. I don't care what people assume and if they look at my posting, they will see I want to beat them in benching but don't ever wish cards to fail on people. Just because I prefer nVidia, doesn't mean I want to see AMD gone or failing. People who think that need to look at what I actually post.

AMD MSI cards have had loads of fan issues, some of the 7 series with diode issues.

MSi gaming R9 270 fan oil leak?,
I've noticed the same thing with my two MSI R280x cards. The fans have seized on one of them.

Well as long as you really dont care and you can handle the flack.

I think in total they had 3 recalls on select 7950 batches, granted one was a tim application issue that MSI allowed the end user to sort if they wanted.

7970 lightnings would randomly die, I had 3 do this as well as a few other members here and over at xs.

Fan oil on some r9 gaming editions, haven't read much into this but it appears to take its toll on cards regardless of mining.

Now this, though amd are hardly to blame, the drivers are fine on reference which is all they are designed for.

Safe to say MSI have had no luck catering for the red side for the last few years :(

Indeed.

Thanks for bringing it to light Greg.

Actually its all MSI cards.

A quick Google tells you that, MSI 780 Fan issues https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/699433/msi-gaming-oc-gtx-780-fan-issues/

MSI 780 Fan oil leak http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/118704-GTX-780-Leaking-Oil

I have no doubt 780 Lighning's will become a cropper to these problems if they already aren't, inevitably this always starts out with people finding this as an AMD fault which then transpires to include Nvidia, being an MSI GPU wide fault. if you think about it it would be Nvidia and AMD, they all use the same cooling

MSI have had nothing but problems with their cards for far to long now, mostly cooling related, i have said it so many times, what has happened to MSI?

Either fix your cards, MSI. or retire.

In fairness to them, they usually stand up, acknowledge the problem in hand, release a statement then go about sorting it out. BUT it shouldn't happen in the first place.

It stands to reason the fan oil thing would take its toll on Nvidia cards too, same cooler, same fans. Though I don't know the extent of the issue with the newer 'gaming' coolers.

I do like MSI but their QC has gone to **** lately.

Reference AMD cards hit 94C in less than two minutes and stays locked there. This would turn the inside of your pc into an oven.

Actually the heat is ALL dumped out the back of the case, in that respect, in terms of sheer amount of heat displaced from the case, its a very efficient cooling solution.

Totally agree Paul. EVGA are my favourite and MSI are my second choice but QC seems to be taking a step back. The fan oil leakage was another issue that was hitting miners but with the same cooler being used on the 7 series it was only a matter of time before we see those getting hit as well.

Won't be going anywhere near them until all issues are sorted out.

Cheers for the heads up anyway.

No probs Gee and I fully understand.
