Is the 290 non X version not better performance than the 780?

Want to get something that will last me for a bit.

Your welcome, but the reality is I don't know much. My interest beyond the basics wanes pretty quickly. :)

Take a look at the anandtech link I posted in #16. The difference there isn't much.

Put it this way, if you didn't have a frame rate counter running, and someone swapped between the two cards, I very much doubt you'd notice the difference. :D

Edit : I'd rate the 290 and 780 as equal, and the 780ti and 290X as equal (though technically most people seem to agree that the 780TI is the fastest gpu available - by a fraction. One card might out perform the other by a frame or few frames, sometimes much less.

Edit : 2 - Out of interest, why did you sell your 280X? Are you running a very high resolution? :)

The two are around on par, but 290 still has 1GB more vram and cost quite a bit lesser than the GTX780...but it'd probably be wise to avoid the MSI Twin FrozR cooler/Gaming models as there seem to be quite high probability with fan problems; for the GTX780 you get less vram and cost quite a bit more, but it is probably more likely that you might not run into issue that might require you to fiddle around to solve.

I see where your coming from even the 290x is round the same ish price as the 780 so what do you rekon 780 or 290x

I doubt the 1 gb if vram is anything to worry about tbh. It you want powerful gpu get 780ti.I would go with EVGA their rma is amazing and the best in the UK.

This.

The 290 is actually a bit faster but there isn't much in it. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1036?vs=1068

its about the same difference as the 290X vs 780TI.

On average the 780ti is roughly 20% faster than a 780. Also, with the new 337 drivers, they simply laugh at the 290's.

If you want to get into that the 290 simply laughs at the 780TI with Mantle.

Lets not get into AMD's custom low level API vs Nvidia's DirectX Duck-Tape Hacks.
