Amd or Nvidia lol

For me it was very simple. the 290 has more vRam, a wider Bus (512Bit) is a bit faster and costs a lot less than the 780, it was a no-brainer.

Why would i pay more for less GPU? the answer came to me very quickly.

If you want to get into that the 290 simply laughs at the 780TI with Mantle.

Lets not get into AMD's custom low level API vs Nvidia's DirectX Duck-Tape Hacks.

1. Mantle doesn't work
2. Mantle is implemented in 3 games
3. Mantle doesn't work

I agree, let's not get into a driver wiping the floor over an API.

so just go for a 780 then? as its value and performance?

being an AMD kinda guy thus far, I was debating this same thing not so long ago.
I ended up choosing a 780 Lightning - "Best build quality, best performance and massive overclocking ability", as recommended by some of the top overclockers here.

I'm very happy with it.

Your just making stuff up now, looking at your signature its obvious your a very proud Nvidia fan club member but this over the line now, this is a persons money.

Mantle works just fine, let me tell you. You don't have a supported gpu though so that explains why it does not work for you. :)

As for Mantle game implementation, the reality is that Mantle has 20+ games in development on four different game engines, and the adoption rate is faster than DX11 in its first year. Its going pretty well and its only going to get better, at least until DX12 is out and ready and thats a long way off yet.

Is it not badly broken in BF4 ? Why yes it is, that's 33% of games that don't work, its absolutely not needed in Thief either. Right now, this is the red teams baby, and god forbid anyone says anything truthful about it. Yes this is someone elses money and buying an AMD card that you sometimes have to fanny around to get games working, use a frankly rubbish Mantle API as a selling point with the ridiculous extra VRAM argument is why he should be staying clear of AMD.

Pro's of nVidia from my perspective:

PhysX
GameWorks
G-Sync
Cuda
3D
Games optimised very quickly

Cons of nVidia:

Price

Pro's of AMD:

Mantle
TrueAudio
Price

Cons of AMD:

Sometimes needs work to get games working
AMD not always the quickest at getting games optimised

That's my experience with both AMD and nVidia :)

You have a 290?

Then you will know they only run at about 70c and that AMD have nearly all the major games developers as partners, so most games actually run perfectly on AMD hardware from day one while Nvidia often need months to get things working.

I did say my experiences ;)

Do you have a 780?

A 780 would be my choice in your position, but it all depends on how much you like eye candy such as PhysX, TXAA, HBAO+ etc in games which utilise such features - e.g. ACIV, which just isn't the same when I turn PhysX and HBAO+ off.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides however, and don't let yourself be bullied into getting a specific GPU by those who have a clear cut agenda (why on Earth such people have an agenda to the point of other people's money is beyond me though).

Greg's list of features is pretty accurate, and that's a basic framework for buying a new high end GPU from which you could work from - however, some may dispute the first con point of AMD that Greg listed, I can't comment; the last AMD GPU I had (and still have lying around somewhere) is an HD5450.

Either way, no matter which you get (780/780TI/290/290X) - you will be happy with the performance of any one of these cards, to the point where you'll end up getting another one :D

290p unless you really want PhysX.
I've had both a 290p and a 780 Classified and the 290p is the better performer (slightly).

The majority of gamers are only likely to use these features on Gregs list. The ones that are free and are used in games.

Nvidia

PhysX
GameWorks

Amd

Mantle
True Audio

Looks a little different. Amd also have TressFx but we all know that's open. 3D is not a problem on the AMD side.
