Road Cycling Essentials

I've been interviewing for another job that's within commuting distance. 11.6 miles each way, about half of which is on country roads in the middle of nowhere, very flat. I could probably get there in 40 minutes or so. I'm really hoping I get it... I should find out at some point over the coming week...

you'll get there quicker! I get to work which is 11.5mi in around 40-45(depends on a traffic and being london there's loads of during rush hour)

I just installed an SRAM chain no problem. The instructions say to connect the quick link and then put pressure down on the pedals whilst holding both brakes to make the quick link click into place fully. Worked first time for me.

This ^ never had a problem with the power lock/link or kmc missing links.

On the other hand this special butterfly managed to bleed his dropper seatpost but contaminated my front brake pads. Full retard was enabled.

Only on my own bike would this happen! Did a customers reverb with no issues at all :o

I havnt really ever had any issues joining chains with quick links.

Trying to get them off though...there isnt anyting "quick" about it!

Often resort to using pliers like this:

< Doesn't bother with instructions.

Anyway, all set for first club run in 6 months. Should be 60 miles all in, with mild tail wind on the way back. Not sure what group to go with; either 2nd fastest and risk getting dropped or 3rd fastest and possibly end up spending more time at the front.

3rd group looking more likely, but will eye up the 'competition' when I get there.

I know dem feels on the front indexing. Installed a new chain on the Ti and decided to readjust the front derailleur (big mistake). To make it worse it's a clamp on so you have to get the angle and height right, then reattach the cable, get the tension right and start the indexing. Much readjustments and swearing was had.
Got any tips on how to do that? I'm really struggling with mine and spent several frustrating hours on it on Friday and it's still not shifting acceptably. I figured no-one on here was still using band-on front derailleurs so I asked for help on Retro Bike.

So far I need to check the following before I go back in a fit of rage and fix* it permanently with my Rover Service Tool #1 (BFH):
-For the height you need to line the outer edge of the cage with the teeth on the big ring. The cage should be between 1mm & 3mm above the ring teeth (I didn't know this bit and only came about it by a lot of frustrating trial and error).
-The cage needs to run parallel to the ring (sounds obvious in hindsight but I didn't check).

It's indexed but I couldn't find a spot where it shifted between the two. It either won't shift onto the big ring or it throws the chain off, but I can't find that spot in between where it just shifts. I'm usually quite patient with this stuff but I am at the point where I am about to go and throw it in the Thames.

Edit: and why is there no cable adjustment on the front? FFS

What shop are you at?

I had issues removing them at first, but seem to have got the knack of it now, it's all about putting asymmetric pressure on the link! :D

Got up to do club run this morning, got out the shower, it's raining, usually would go out but as its bank holiday going to lay in watch some f1 and head out tomorrow! If only all weekends were this long!

I got soooo frustrated taking off a SRAM power link I had to buy some master link pliers. Could not for the life of me do it without.

And now I have a Shimano chain, waste of money :p

Right, 22 miles done and it's only just 9:15am. I was out before 8 and there was so little traffic! It was great. Very windy, though, so slower than I was hoping for, booo. A motorist stuck his tongue out at me, which is a new one. I was descending the final hill before home and was doing about 30. I'd seen him at the junction ahead of me. He let the two cars ahead of me pass and then just pulled out. I'd stayed back in case he did that, but I still shouted at him and then he stuck his tongue out at me. I guess it's better than getting the finger. I still wish people would look at junctions, though... We need car drivers to "Think, bicycle", rather than cyclists having to do quite so much "Think, dumbass".

I'm no expert, for me it was trial/error a lot of swearing and a bit of luck. But afaik if it won't shift to big ring then there isn't enough cable tension and if it's shifting off then you should be able to adjust the limit screws.

Having a barrel adjuster really helps you could fit an inline one:

I took some pics of the relevant pages from the Zinn book and named them in order of pages it might help:

Food for thought , think I'll definailty go the handbuilt option as it seems to make sense. I've googled the hub and rims and they seem decent enough.

All set just need to decide tubeless or not unless anyone can see any potential pitfalls

After reading more on tubeless I'm still unsure:confused:

Any people on here run tubeless and have any advice/thoughts ?

Cheers for that - looks like some useful information there.

I don't think I can fit an inline adjuster because the bike has downtube shifters. There isn't actually anywhere to put them because the shifter is mounted on the boss where the cable guides are on a brifter system.

You can have them built tubeless-ready (with the airtight tape) then run them as normal clinchers with an inner tube for now, then you can run tubeless tyres if you decide to ever try it.

Went out for a quick 20 miler this morning to get the legs back in order after the Wales trip. Was fairly pleasant out and managed to keep an average of 27km/h which was alright given the wind. Still feeling in great shape after the cycle fit. No more of the usual aches and pains, its just fatigue and stiffness in the legs now which is great!

Got cut up by a car right at the end of my ride when he thought he could overtake me when going over a junction, only to see a traffic island on the other side. Its alright though, he didn't damage his car, instead he opted to cut across my path, so, no damage done eh(?!). I rifled off a few sharp words, much to the bemusement of some passers by stood outside a pub.

after you set the limit screws to get the tension right it seems you need to shift to the middle ring on the shifter and set the chain to the middle ring.~

now try to hold your deraileur so it's hoovering almost exactly in line with your chain whilst you attach the cable back to it.

if you do it right you should be able to shift between the rings fine or be very close to it with minimal adjustment to the tension off the wire.

I did it 100% by eye rather than feel like I do my disc brakes.. I can never get them properly lined up to within a hair of the rotors without them rubbing unless I visually look at the brake pads with a torch
