Nothing wrong with those MPG claims - I get similar out of my 118i, which has a bit more power.

There is everything wrong with those claims, they are ludicrous. I dispute yours as well SDK but they are at least more plausible on a 1 year old direct injection engined car into which significant effort has been put into better consumption/lower CO2 than a 10 year old 2 litre petrol Honda Civic!

The Civic Type-S has a combined consumption figure of 37mpg, even the extra-urban is 46. There is no way it's doing 45 around town and 55mpg on a run, that would be simply unheard of. It's fairly common for older cars to match the quoted figures, they hark from the days when manufacturers were less skilled at winning the tests, but to smash them quite so comprehensively is just nuts.

You don't get 45 around town from a 118i either unless your definition of around town includes rather less cold runs through stop-start traffic and rather more wafting along the ring-road, around town even with a 320d ED 35mpg is what I was getting, cold engines and stop-start just kill any semblance of economy stone dead unfortunately. Your on-a-run claims sound reasonable, though.

The type s is a 2.2 diesal not a petrol

Fair enough, I thought his Civic was a recent model.

People's definitions of driving situations always varies so it's hard to compare from stories on forums.

Ignoring the fact the guy has now bought a car...and only had 3 grand.

You do not get 45mpg from a diseasel civic around town. At best 35, absolute best. I had one, both in remapped and standard tune. I could also only get it into the 50's on a very very long run

I'm sorry to disappoint but I do and have been for the 18 months I've had it. Anyway not trying to have am argument or falL out with anyone.

Why are you recommending a 2.2 diesel Civic to somebody who had less than 3 grand to spend on a car and ended spending 2k on a Clio? You can forgive me for assuming you were talking about the sort of Type-S you could actually buy for £2k rather than the more expensive one..

the 2001-2005 shape Civic Type-S had a 2.0 i-VTEC Petrol engine.

I've just had a look as I remember uploading a pic for some reason and it was sitting on an average of 46mpg over 10k

If you achieve 45mpg in town driving then your definition of town driving must be very different to mine

Belts and dephaser is a £550-£650 job from a specialist (and it must be a specialist, not a mate who works at a garage). Cam belt is every 5 years and aux belt every 3 years ( i forget the mileage, something like 60k and 32k).

Price is pretty high for a 172, even with belts done, so I hope they have been done recently. I only paid £1650 for my 182, but that need the belts doing which cost me £560.

If you join the Cliosport forum, you'll save a small fortune in discounts on parts and you'll also find a good reliable specialist.

Yea joined that forum yesterday.
So its not advisable to use my local garage i have been using for years?
Would rather not use Renault in leicester or tamworth to be honest.
Its going to have its exhaust fixed and heater blower tomorrow, That same garage quoted £350 for new Cam and Aux belts fitted.
Would save me so much hassle to have them do it at the same time!

God this car is costing me a fortune! hahahah

People keep telling me i paid top wack, But i have been looking about and cant find a 2004 172 with the same ish miles as mine for less than £3k. (in black with the darker wheels).

Over all i have spent... around 3k. I may have to wait to pay for the cambelt till end of the month when i get paid -.-

I suggest you read up on the issues with cam belts and timing on these cars on the clio forum, then decide which is the best option, and whether the small saving is actually worth the risk of having to have the engine replaced if it goes wrong.

I take mine to Diamond motors in Long Eaton Nottingham, but BTM in Birmingham is probably a little closer?

http://www.btmperformance.com/

Dephaser might be worth doing also for peace of mind, it's an additional £200, but if it goes you'll need to have both belts redone again.

Also if you sign up to be a full member (£12/year), you'll see the for sale section, lots of sub £2k clios in there normally. You'll also benefit from the traders section, and guides, etc

Don't retrim your own wheel. Just pay Snappy (on the forums) to retrim it for you.

He did my old Trophy wheel and it was fantastic. Best mod I made to her!

Yea Snappy on the clio forum. Have a little search and find examples of his work.

What he does is he trims one for you. Sends it out. You take off your old one then post it back to him.

Swapping over steering wheels takes about 15mins and is very easy. There are guides on the forum which show you step by step.
