Windows 8.1 Update 1 arriving on March 11

Annoyingly I also cant seem to do an in place upgrade with my copy of Windows 8, the only option I get is to save nothing...

Not really keen on doing a clean install for this one update, seems like there is no choice.

I guess I will put it off as long as I can for now in the hope some other solution turns up.

You have to edit a file so you can "upgrade" windows 8 over itself. Make sure you also have the correct UK iso as the US version won't work. Powershell also needs to be disabled in turn off windows features.

I'll see if I can find the link to the file that needs editing.

Here it is just follow these instructions.

You'll probably need to reactivate over the phone as you will need to use a placeholder key to start the upgrade process then re-enter your key after.

Cheers when I get some time I will give this a try.

Problem is, people really shouldn't have to jump through these kind of hoops to update their OS properly, from the hours of time I spent online looking for a solution it is clear it is affecting quite a few people.

MS always have this issue with the larger service pack type of updates, they always have. I've rolled it out over a dozen machines and 2 had a problem, including my main office PC.

how do you disable pop up task bar on the start screen / metro apps it's doing my head in.

That's a shame, if you disable show apps in taskbar then the taskbar doesn't pop up. Bur I quite like them in taskbar. Just don't want pop up taskbar it's truly horrible.

Be nice if could disable the cross and shrink buttons as well, although that more cosmetic than truly annoying. Still fund it easier to drag down with a mouse than click on a small button.

Ideally what I want is tablet settings but with show apps on taskbar(but without popup taskbar), both on tablet and laptop.

Unfortunately, I'm not impressed with this update as the new app notification on the start screen is about as thick as three planks of wood as it was telling me that a new application had been installed when the program in question has been installed (and used) before the update was installed, the close button that was added to the metro apps doesn't really do anything as the processes for the apps remains active unlike how they are in windows 8 when closing an app closes it completely and I've now got an annoyance in the windows module installer worker as it on occasion starts up and starts running the hard drive ragged, hogs RAM (as in the amount of RAM used keeps going up and down like a yoyo) and also hogs a whole core of the processor with the only way to stop it being a complete reboot or killing the process in task manager.

I'm thinking of backing up everything on the laptop and taking it back to windows 7 because of that mess.

I have updated my desktop PC and laptop to Win8.1 Update 1 with no issues, personally I think if I had your problems I would reformat and do a clean install from a Win8.1 Update 1 ISO ,easy to find on the net.

Just had the update come through automatically, quite a surprise as I'd just read the thread about MS dropping support for 8.1 and was looking into updating manually.

The update seems to be running fine and it was quite refreshing to be dumped straight to desktop upon rebooting.

After going back to Windows 8 due to format awhile back I thought "Windows 8 sucked" hard without some shortcuts and start menu. It was too Metro'ed but 8.1 is more both sided. Still like 7 but businesses cant use 8 as they'd need 8.1 - can businesses have 8/8.1? or 7 only?

Did this, no matter what I do I never get the option to keep all my settings like all the guides suggest I should.

Is this the one thats on the Store? I can't keep up whats what. Just updated the AMD PC through the night. Must say, 8.1 seems quite lovely. Barring the Windows button that I don't use.

Something about it seems more fluid… Also seems strange now to what I'm used to as it boots to the desktop.

Heh, problem was it was a nice change nearly 2 years ago going from boot to desktop to boot to information tiles. Then another nice change from 8 to 8.1 back to desktop.

Such a dilemma. :D

Though I still can't get over how silky smooth 8.1 is and how nice the store looks on 8.1. Sometimes it doesn't quite feel like windows then on the other hand it does. Pop into the store and it feels like Xbox. Quite a strange nice feeling.

This. The Win+X menu is pretty useful to be honest, it has some useful tools, it is the one thing I miss when using Win7 and not Windows 8.1.

I bought a new laptop last week, and I have been using Windows 8.

It's terrible!
It took my laptop around 10 hours to update to 8.1 for some reason, it kept 'gathering information'. It took around 2 restarts for it to work!

It's an absolute struggle to find out how to change options, like removing a password on logon. It should be intuitive not and not require me to google the answer.
Luckily I don't use my laptop that much, but my god they really did drop the ball with this OS

Running like a dream for me. Super fast slick OS.
