Do you have Powershell turned on in Windows features, try turning it off if so.

What ever happened to the start button we were going to get, the win 8.1 update did not have it.

Nothing happened to it, we were never going to get it as the start menu demomstrated for a later release of Windows 8, not the update that we just had.

This got me a little further at least, it now downloads and installs the update.. reboots then gets to about 90 odd % and then gives me a failure to configure windows update message and rolls back

My PCs taking around a minute longer to log on after this update and it won't shutdown or restart now either. Windows 8 needs to die tbh.

I don't care how they label it, this is service pack size. Deserves a fresh install imo.

I'll try a fresh install tomorrow. Do we still update to 8.1 via the store or did they come to their senses and add it to where every other update comes from, namely Windows Updates?

Easier said than done though sometimes, my gaming PC is also the family and my work PC. The amount of stuff I would have to backup means it would be a massive pain.

Seems I might have no choice, no matter what I have tried I am no closer to getting the update to install.

No dice in the end. Window Update components comprehensively broken.... Appears it managed to shut itself down before an update completed, according to the logs, and even using DISM scan and repair functions wouldn't fix it. Ended up having to do a clean installation and update post-install.

Relocated user profiles etc before update to 2919355 to test and it worked fine.

I've installed the update on numerous PC's and a couple had issues, on one of them the only way I could get the update installed was to download the 8.1 with update ISO, and put it on a memory stick to perform an in-place Windows upgrade so I kept my Programs and files.

Any major update can cause issues.

I remember recommending SP3 to be installed on XP many years ago and it broke a female friends PC,I did feel a little guilty but then we all know some unlucky users will get an issue or two with WU.

It would be embarrassing having too many service packs so close together?

To counter balance it, I haven't had any issues and it uses less RAM now too.

Annoyingly I also cant seem to do an in place upgrade with my copy of Windows 8, the only option I get is to save nothing...

Not really keen on doing a clean install for this one update, seems like there is no choice.

I guess I will put it off as long as I can for now in the hope some other solution turns up.

Embarrassment eh? Great.

Just to clarify, I use 8.1 on my spare machine and it had Update 1 installed, with no issues either so far.

Same here, updated it and installed via WU when it was officially released. 0 issues have been had.
