The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Nice to see the Nikon contingent growing. :p

How would I do macro photography on the cheap? A mate wants photos of the carbon fibre weave in the structure that he's designed and built. Do macro tubes offer decent clarity?

It's a cheap way to get macro results, its no comparison to say a 100L macro though.

If its a one off, i'd borrow or rent. If you do it regularly, get a macro lens. That's my take on it anyway.

Just for the weekend...

I'm a happy man. :)

And my new gang all together. Still in two minds about whether to keep the 60D for the extra reach when I need it.

Don't keep a body for extra reach, buy a lens for that.

1 - once you get used to the 5d files it's hard to go back.
2 - lenses hold value better

Unless you keep it for back up, I'd get an 1.4x adaptor even.

It is not that simple though once you reach a certain length.
I use a 300mm F/5.0 with 1.4xTC on crop. Anything longer with reasonable aperture (f/5.6) and quality )sets me back 3 grand at least, more like 6 to get something really worth whole.

The high pixel density of crops is great for many applications.

And Is ay this as a new FF D800 owner!

Most length I think I would need is 350mm, so a 1.4x should see to that, on a f/2.8 lens I wouldn't lose much at all. I do motorsports, most of the action can be had between 100-200mm depending on track.

It would however be handy being able to walk around with a 24-70 on the 5D with a 60D and 70-200 on my back ready to swing round rather than having to swap lenses all the time.

As an aside, just put the nifty fifty on the 5D. Wow.

If that is all the length you need then sure, you wont need the 60D for length.

For me, 400mm on crop is only just enough. Birds are pretty small!

Finally come to the conclusion those peak designs straps are actually a bit crap? :p I doubt you will ever go back now you have a proper strap :)

They have their use, I used the cuff a lot on holiday and the leash is handy to keep scrunched up in your pocket but with 4kg of weight I'd want something a bit more substantial. Spent this evening properly adjusting it and it's surprising how comfortable it is.

Reach over 400mm cripples the wallet! Birds need too much patience for my liking. :D

Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM not in budget then? :D

I use my cuff too. Most of the time I have no strap on my camera but when I do want one I want to quickly attach one and not spend ages fumbling with loops and eyelets. As much as I like my Nikon strap, the leash and cuff are great and take seconds to attach and detach when required.

Yeah I tried mine with half that weight a 50D and 70-200 2.8 and it was just awful. I ended up continually slipping my camera back into my bag as it's so uncomfortable. I have always had my doubts about the quality of the cord on the attachments. I'd trust it with a body and prime but that's about it. I much prefer the Black Rapid.

When I get mine I will keep my 50D for that reason, I do have a 1.4TC anyway but still use that on a crop anyway, plus for what I would get for the 50D I might as well just keep it as a spare and run it into the ground. :)

Me too :)

I been doing a bit of birding with my non OS worthing sigma

It isn't quite enough I feel in a lot of situations just like you said DP

I can't crop in far from what I taken today without pixellation
But I was only having a play

Well probably have to get a long prime at some point
