The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Aha, baptism of fire! Be interesting to see how you get on with it.

I think the 35 is about to happen for me.

I think you should do it. I adore my 35mm.

p.s. I am still a little sick about the UPS/Duty bill, £180.49 in cash. It was £30 more than this site http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/ estimated.

Although, it is still cheaper than WEX by £70. You guys in the States who get it for $950 are getting an absolute bargain.

Should have done this years ago :-D, or at least at the start of the week so I would get it for the weekend!

Will have $112 rewards at BH. Would love to put it towards the sigma 35 but might end up getting a SB-700 to go alongside my SB-600, or simply a CF card

Yeah, still reeling from the 5D3 & grip tbh! :)

Might end up flogging my 10-22 to part fund it as I don't use it that much these days. If I end up missing it I'll get a 17-40 down the road to use on the 5D instead.

Get it for the summer.

It had cross my mind to trade mine for a Sigma but when i look at the PoTN thread and I think there is no point. Click back a few pages, the images the 35L can produce is astounding, and it's due an update!

The Sigma is a bargain for the 35, on FF it makes great sense.

I think Canon have to respond to the Sigma 35 and possibly the 50 now too. Be interesting to see what they come up with.

Agreed on the 35mm length on FF - I've borrowed a friend's 24L II on occasion for use on crop which provides a similar focal length.

Tbh, if I had a Canon 50L I wouldn't be rushing to replace it. It can do 1.2, secret weapon :p. Check out the archive thread on PoTN. It might not be the sharpest but it has been a great workhorse for many togs and it doesn't stop being so because a new lens came out. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1339950&page=28

What the Sigma 50 does is remove the sales for the Zeiss Otus as that is also new to the market. £3,000+ more, and no AF. You really REALLY have to want a Zeiss glass and/or you have to have 58mm over 50mm means a great deal to you.

I can't see the Sigma having any impact on the sales of the Otus two very different markets. It might impact on the used prices of the 50L but the Sigma 35 doesn't seem to have finished off the Canon 35L or Nikon 35G. I'd like to see the Sigma on the more demanding Nikon D800E sensor to gauge it.

Unless every Zeiss buyer is buying it Zeiss for the name then yes i think the Sigma will take a big portion of the Zeiss sales.

The Zeiss will sell in very limited quantities at a high price to those with high MP cameras wanting the ultimate IQ. I can't see the Sigma having any bearing on its sales at all. A £700 quid lens with autofocus and a £3k manual focus lens are aimed at two different markets.

It is aimed at a different market but we are not talking about handbags where bragging rights counts for everything. What it matters is IQ which they are both very very similar.

You can MF a AF lens too you know :p

Bah, nowhere seems to have it in stock, or any idea when it'll be in stock. You got lucky!

I ordered when the article from PetaPixel dropped. it was 11am here, so like 5 or 6am In the Eastern seaboard time so most americans were still asleep. :D

I basically been planning to upgrade from the Canon 50/1.4 for a while, not really got optical quality, more for I want a bigger lens to hold. So this new Sigma fitted the bill, even if it wasn't up to Otus quality, if it was same as the Canon I'd be quite satisfied with that.

I hadn't used my 35 in anger at the time so I held off incase there was any quirks with it I didn't like. Now I know the 35 is ace I feel comfortable getting it.

Still, I imagine it'll be out before my next major outing(s) in June, so plenty of time yet.

Got the Sigma dock, then I realise it's not as useful as I thought I thought it could've been.

I need +9 on one body and +14 on the other (just to show even if the lens perfectly lined up with 1 body at zero, it doesn't mean it's perfect for someone else)

So if I adjust the lens in the dock to suit to make it 0 on one body, I still have to adjust the other to be +5. And I still have not tried the lens on the older 5D2 yet. I guess the dock is only really useful if your body do not have MA built in and/or for zoom lenses where you can MA multiple focal length. For prime lenses on current bodies you don't need the dock at all.

Guess it means I'll just save it for firmware updates lol

Do you not get the dock with the lens?

Hmm, you don't. That's a bit pony. I can adjust it in my camera though, can I not?

Ah, now I understand what Raymond is saying. Cool.

No why supply the dock with the lens? The dock can be used with all Sigma lenses released in the past year or two :)

Yes glad you did. the dock is only useful for updating the firmware and to some, Adjusting the focus

Delivers arrived yesterday and today...:) my conversion from Canon to Nikon well under way.... :p
