I fancy a space game

Yawn. You're clearly one of those people that didn't play any of the good aspects of Eve and then feel the need to spread talk of everything being like that.
If Eve really played like that do you actually think anyone would play it? Fine you don't like it but don't talk crap. It's not like it's the only game to not be quite a shiny as it's trailers either...

You are probably correct, I am being a bit of a jerk on purpose really. I empathise with the OP on this because I have waited for years for a decent space game and I have similar time constraints (young children). In my opinion EVE online was a good game in it's time but it is now completely outdated and *should* have been outclassed by now. CCP have effectively maintained their niche market while failing to innovate and bring the game up to date. Now finally we have new games such as Star Citizen and Elite in the works and I don't think it's a coincidence that EVE Valkyrie has suddenly appeared...

In the meantime EVE just does not suit the mass majority of people but I am sure there are people like me that stuck with it because it was frankly the best thing available and better than no space game. So I am in the same boat, I don't want to go back to EVE because it will soon be outclassed, X Rebirth seems to have failed spectacularly and I am still waiting for a decent space game!

stay clear of eve online it'll put you off space games and it'll take you a while to recover the spaceships handle like submarines.

Just nosied in on the thread, been looking for a nice space game. Im finding a quick blast on the FTP Star Conflict is satisfying my wants somewhat, buts its beta and FTP so limited, is just quick blasts of space fighting really.

Anyhows thought I would mention I always check Humble Bundle, G2A and GO2Arena for my steam keys before going steam, used em all and usually find what Im after well cheaper.

Loved both I-War games! As mentioned physics were brilliant.

Your ships were big and handled like it, no x-wing style flying about here. Unless you used the fighter turrets which you could break off from your main ship and dog fight with them if you wanted.
You had full control of your ship with the ability to turn off assisted flying (thrusters would auto fire to move the ship in the direction it was pointed as best as possible). You could burn up some speed, override assisted control and pivot the ship about 180 degrees so you're flying backwards and face your pursuers.
Or do the same thing and pivot 90 to strafe a capital ship or station with high powered but very low range cutting lasers.

three methods of propulsion too, regular thrusters.
LDS sub light drive for zipping about inside systems (can literally fly past planets and moons in seconds or put a few 100k between you and enemies if needed).
Capsule jump at la grange points in a system for FTL (think babylon5).

Brilliant games that deserved a wider audience and the same acclaim as the x-wing/tie fighter games tbh.

Oh, is that still in Beta?
TBH, I never even looked. I just got it, played the heck out of it and went for it. I still play occasionally, although they've changed the upgrade system around and seem to have several different currencies (in-game and real credits), which go to buy upgrade packages that stack to apply to each separate level of upgrade, which advances your actual individual item upgrade by one, which gives you one extra point of damage per shot on something where it's barely noticable.... or something.

I dunno. I stopped paying that much attention, as the Level Up scores seemed to get get further and further away, made harder when you keep getting lumped with increasing stupid Lone Wolf players on your 'team'! :D

Eve was never really aimed at the "mass majority" it is a very deep game which has a lot of depth and you cant really compare it to games like Star Citizen etc because they are not in anyway the same. On oneside you have cockpit fps/fps and on the other you have micro managed ship to ship combat and very large social arena to play in.

Eve will always be Eve, and there will be other games which appeal to the various other needs of players who want to play space combat sims which are mostly based within the cockpit and fps mode etc but Eve will always remain with its own little niche.

Is X Rebirth completely void of any merit whatsoever?

Looking for a new space game aswell, my favourite was Starlancer. Didn't get on with Freelancer the cartoony graphics put me off.

Mass Effect 1,2,3

Played and completed all of them, brilliant games but they are games in space rather than space games :)

Due to real life getting in the way I only last night got 30 mins to actually try X3 with XRM installed and it really does try hard to make the worst first impression doesn't it.
I started a new game with the Humble Merchant character as I fancied a bit of trading. Once loaded I looked around and realised, hey cool, I've got 2 ships. So I ordered my Discoverer to follow me while I set off and it promptly flew itself straight into me and blew itself up....

Beta available now, full beta 30th May, it would seem.
But it's £100 to get the beta... Might hold back on that for a bit.

Looks ace though!

Yea it's expensive, but you do get quite a lot for your money. I think the £100 includes ALL future expansions and there are at least 2 already planned, plus a bunch of other bonuses and more starting options.

I have played the alpha. It gets compared a lot to star citizen, but Elite is a lot different and is on a whole different level really. There seems to be almost no PR/hype surrounding the game and I think it will take the world by surprise once it's released. Braben is a bit of a silent genius :P

But as someone else said. Starpoint Gemini is quite interesting if you want something right now. It's bit of a cross between Freelancer and Eve.
