BMW and M Power Owners

If you where to buy a late model sub 100k mile e39 m5, how much money would you bank in a "broken car fund"?

That's a difficult question, it depends on what work has already been done / the condition it is in before purchase. Brakes and clutch are expensive, not sure about the vanos in these.

Please don't purchase one if you can't afford to keep it properly maintained. Decent ones are hard to find due to people doing exactly this :(

I wasn't talking about the F11.

The context of the previous conversation was regarding me purchasing an F11 550i, I assumed you were commenting on this.

No, sorry, should have made it clearer - it was just a general question.

Why did you buy a Golf GT? Surely the residual on a Golf R would have mitigated the extra outlay? etc.

The M5 is considerably more expensive and wasn't available for a while anyway.

It was just a general question about the crossover point between the two.

What goes through the mind of a 550i buyer when they choose one instead of an M5 (obviously given the assumption that they have a choice, i.e. assuming that the M5 has been released at the time of the decision!), how similar they are, whether a tuned 550i can reach M5 straight line performance, whether the increased purchase price is offset by year 3 residuals (assuming three year cash flow isn't an issue), etc.

Mainly for places where petrol is cheaper I assume, where some people don't want a performance car but simply a powerful German v8 saloon.

That is my question - how much do you need to keep one properly maintained?

Say you buy one for £10k how much do you think you would need sitting in the bank in case it breaks, per year?

You need a wedge with which you don't have to worry about keeping a "broken car fund" :D

Honestly, I have no idea, sorry.

Its an old car, how long is a piece of string, i doubt anyone could quantify how much it will cost to maintain at the age these now are as it will be pot luck and massively usage dependent..

Servicing you can obviously look up yourself, BMW are actually pretty cheap.

It's £15,000 more. Thats like asking why anyone buys a 528i instead of a 535i or a 530d instead of a 535d.

Which is also a fair question, if you factor in residuals. If the 528i costs £35k and is worth £25k after three years, vs. a 535i which costs £40k but is worth £32k after three years, then the 535i is the better buy over three years even if it costs more to buy. I'm asking this same question of the 550i vs. M5.

If, after three years, the M5 is worth £45k vs. purchase price of £75k, and the 550i is worth £25k vs. purchase price of £60k, then it's not such a stupid comparison. But I've no idea what these comparative numbers are, that's partly why I'm asking.

If this is too much of a tangent to discuss sensibly in this thread then I'll go and read Google!

Don't forget the increase in running costs.

They just sound like every other V8 to me? My Range Rover and Merc both sound the same as that.

My neighbour has a lovely 4.8l V8 X5 and enjoys nailing it away from the house after reversing out of the garage. It makes me want a V8 everytime.

need to paint my calipers as they are looking tired, what do you guys think about yellow?
