New CTR

Wow...thats not very understated is it. Don't even need to got to Halfords, it already been Max Powered up. But £30k sounds a bit on the pricey side.

So it's this or a new Impreza STI at those prices, I know where my money would be going. I know they're two different animals but I'd put money on the Subaru being an all round better car

Better in which way? It'll probably be quicker, but I'd imagine the Honda will be better built, more reliable, depreciate less etc.

Having been in both an FN2 and late blob eye imprezas I'd say the build quality would be on par in those.

Reliability is hard to say, the civic will be using an engine we have no experience in, the 2.5s in the scoob do have issues but they have supposedly been rectified in the new model.

Depreciation I also think would be on par, look at how well Impreza stis hold their money especially the widetrack DCCD blobeyes

i will be trading in my current 2010 Civic SI when these hit the 15-20k mark which given the depreciation of hot hatches shouldnt be long :)

Ridiculously over priced, hot hatches should not be more than 20k. 10 years ago a CTR was 17k, now its almost doubled.

Car prices have increased massively though, you're not going to get a 'Hot Hatch' in the Civic size range (with the 'quality' Honda seem to be aiming at) for anything like £20k.

Look at the Civic range as it stands now:

SE £17k
SE+ £21k
SR 23k
EX+ 25k

You're only getting a £20k car if you get basic trim level and add a couple of options to it, nevermind the fully fledged range topping performance model.

You might get something like the most basic spec Focus ST for near £22k with no options on it but even there, an ST3 is pushing £26k before you even look at options.

edit - that said, your £17k is a bit exaggerated, Wiki suggests:

The base price for the 2001 Civic Type R (EP3) in the United Kingdom was of £23,100

According to a quick inflation calculator I found on the BoE website, that inflation works out to be something like £32,000 in today's money, so if anything it's about the same price.

Doubt it's going to kill the prices, it might lower the values, but a Mugen badged car and a last of the line N/A VTEC engine will still have a lot of pull.

From what I've seen lately, seeing as I do trade aswell and trade a lot of honda's, EP3 and FN2's seem to be appreciating in price. Maybe because they are the last of N/A car's from Honda:)

But the fn2 was never the preferred platform for the type r anyway, hardly a classic. Plus the new one looks as extreme abd has miles more power and performance. Game over dude.

Yeh I know, but it is still all way too expensive, if I remember correctly the current 9g Civic tops out at near 30k same with some other cars in this segment, that is silly money, surely that cant all be down to inflation.

As for the EP3, wiki is wrong, it started around 17k and topped off at around 19k, the fn2 topped out around 23k.

aye, they should be holding their values well, the k24 Accords seem to be holding their value well too.

I don't think any of that matters, it is still a capable performance Honda, tuned by Mugen (with added brand and scene tax), and is an old school trademark Honda, they will be desirable machines to car enthusiasts, whereas the new vtec turbos will be much more appealing to the mainstream.

I'm the 2nd owner of my FN2, 1st owner passed on all his docs including the original invoice with the dealer from November 2008 and he paid around £16.5k brand new. I can dig it out if you like ?

You sure they were only £16.5k??? I got one that was about 16 months old CTR-GT for £13k, I thought they were around 20-25k new back then... Mine was a 58 plate till i traded for my BMW coupe.
