*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

Some games are noisier, but sounds more like cooling going mad to me. Hard to tell.

Honestly not sure if there is a fault judging by that vid.

Thanks
Well did some more testing last night
Its only like this with new games i.e. Must be writing to the hdd
It lasts for like 20-25 mins then goes and then its a gentle hummmmmmm
Got a free db reader off the apple app store (i know not 100% accurate)
Placed it by the ps4 while playing Tomb Raider with no sound on TV
It was reading between 43-54db

Then i tested it again, i am sat like a metre and half away and it was 33db

Perhaps i am just too used to my gaming pc and the noise that made compared to the ps4
But will keep an eye on it, got like 345 days warranty left so its no biggy

That seems A LOT louder than mine. I had a similar issue with my PS3 .. it sounded like a jet taking off after the first 5 minutes.

i have to admit as a PC gamer as my primary platform ive been very impressed with my PS4 so far. Only have Infamous and MotoGP14 however the graphical quality really impresses me. Maybe its the fact im sitting on my couch playing from a few feet away rather than a few inches, maybe its being on a good gaming tv, i dunno but i dont get all the Pc gamer snobbery that comes with buying a console.

From my point of view i now have two platforms to enjoy games, some ill buy on PC, some ill buy on console, they are not competing with each other as each platform will cater to different game styles.

I dont get all the fuss, very impressed with my PS4 so far and cant wait to play last of us for the first time when its released for ps4 :)

I's funny, I still game on PC but I really have become disenchanted with the fruitless, pointless race that is the PC hardware upgrade game. For me (and many others I have encountered on forums over the years) my PC was an unwitting social replacement... I used to spend hours on it at a time when my social life was less than stellar. I spent many thousands of pounds on constant CPU and GPU upgrades for a temporary, fleeting buzz, and then repeated the process ad infinitum, all the while scoffing at consoles as my poorer cousins.

However, in reality, and despite the higher games prices, consoles are much more suited to people who don't spend an inordinate of time in their bedroom. Not only that, but it's so nice not having to worry about upgrading the machine... games will be produced that look the best they can for the capability it provides...and I can just enjoy the games without worrying about whether I need to upgrade a component. I still play PC games, but only on a laptop, and even then almost strictly limited to RTS games or RPG games that need a mouse to play properly.

I still remember when PC gaming was about innovation and originality, and not mostly about chasing the next graphical API. Lots of smaller development houses that didn't work to time pressure or strict budgets, and concentrated on producing gaming nirvana. How times change.

I am done with the absolutely futile OC hardware/overclocking race, and I feel much better for it. :)

Games can take a while to install to the hdd, which could be the noise?

i think it is that to be honest
my video albeit not a very good one lol, is right up close to the PS4

i am just too impatient, i know its a bluray drive but obviously writing say 22GB data from the disc to the HDD will take a bit of time.
once it goes (the noise) it doesnt come back so i think it is the bluray drive and not the fan

If you have Killzone play that to hear the fan noise it makes it ramp up a fair bit.

It can take ages for some games to install so you can have disc noise for ages after you start playing. Once the game is fully installed it should just spin up for half a min or so then settle back down.

Some people get high noise from the PS4 vibrating on flat surfaces - my PS3 slim does it too when spinning up. See if your PS4 rocks when flat (I'm assuming it's flat as I've not seen the video) by gently pushing down on the corners. Rubber pads/Blu Tack under the corners will fix it.

mines flat and it only seems to have 2 pads underneath, so it rocks a bit when pushing the corners down. odd why they designed it with only two rubber feet.

Good post, I agree with some of what you're saying here but disagree about PC upgrading / overclocking being futile.. I think as long as you have the finances, there is no reason not to enjoy upgrading and benchmarking on PC etc. Some people like to get the absolute best gaming experience, whether it's in the graphics, audio quality, multiple displays or insane resolution that's the best possible and that is on PC. That freedom of choice of your own personal build has a value as well.

Yes consoles can be great, I enjoy playing on our PS4 and Wii U etc. The PC however is on another level if you want it to be, it's all about choice and not being locked down, so many varied options build what suits you. It doesn't even need to be expensive to cope with games around the Xbone and PS4 level. You can build a very cheap PC to do that. Plus with 4K soon becoming mainstream, that high end PC experience will again be a much higher level than the console 1080P/720P experience.

No reason not to enjoy PC and console gaming. I don't understand the need for some people to typecast themselves as one type of gamer 'Console' or 'PC'.

I enjoy both for the different experience they offer.

I was bleeding edge PC gaming for 10 years, and that's the opinion I formed... the costs outweigh the satisfaction you get. As I said, I still game on PC for certain genres, but otherwise consoles are just a more sensible option for me now that my life has changed and I spend less time in my bedroom and more time socialising. :)

I had the same epiphany last decade when it came to PC gaming - its a nice to have, just takes more patience/money than I'm willing to give. Life is just too short...

ps3ud0

I'm all for consoles but every time I read a Digital Foundry face-off and hear what little extra effects the PC version of games generally have, I always feel like I'm missing out.

Having a PC shouldn't stop you socializing :p

That's more to do with becoming more outgoing, what system you play on should have no impact on your social skills :D

I enjoy gaming on whatever the platform, multi-player, single-player, console, handheld and PC it's all good. Gaming is something I do on my downtime, after family, work, social things. I enjoy the little bit of time I get to escape into a game world lol. Even then I probably spend more time reading and on these forums then I do actually playing the games lol.

Liking Wolfenstein (PC) and Walking Dead Season One (PS Vita) atm. Tbh there's to many games coming out in the next couple of years, it's great having all this hardware / consoles but no time to actual play the games :p

I did't say it "stops everyone socialising", obviously I am talking from my own personal perspective here, that should be clear. However that said, if you invest heavily in a custom PC with high-end components, and get into overclocking, then its virtually guaranteed you will spend a lot of time tinkering with it, even when not gaming. It's by its nature not such a "casual" hobby at the best of times.

I have a custom high end PC and consoles and I have time for a social life as well. Although I do not work so that more than likely helps.... :)
