Was Stopped by the police...

I think the most hideously illegal thing I've done speed wise is 105MPH in the middle of the night on a straight and empty bit of 70MPH dual carriageway, and that was a one-off to see what she would get up to. :p

If I got pulled for going 80 in a 40 I would 100% be expecting my licence to be taken away. You're going twice the speed limit, it isn't even the dead of night, and it is still 20MPH more than the maximum speed for that bit of road even if you didn't know what the limit was.

I maintain that we need a picture of the stretch of road. :p

Getting away with 80 in a 40 at 11PM is probably going a little too far with the discretion IMHO.

Google maps of the road?

I can only voucher for what the police officer said to me regarding my speed. She said she was behind me when I pulled away and floored my car. I wasn't really paying attention to my speedo myself but personally I don't think I was doing 80 myself...maybe 60-70 max but seeing as I got away with a slap on the wrist I didn't push to see what speed I was doing. Had they issued me with a ticket or court summons then I would have asked to see proof of the speed I was doing.

Haven't got access to Google maps as I'm on my phone at the moment. But the name of the road is Woodford avenue in Redbridge Essex, coming up the hill from the big roundabout aka charlie's roundabout.

It's double the speed limit - they've thrown away licences for less. I have to say I find it hard to believe, but strange things do happen all the time. :)

I've never heard of anyone losing their licences for 80 in a 40, or indeed 60 in a 30. 6-8 points or a short ban, yes, but never a complete loss of licence unless the driver is still in the 2 years probation period.

Just once. I was on the M3 quite late at night, around midnight roughly and was going quite a bit faster than I should have been. Shortly after I passed Fleet services I had the flashing lights behind me so I pulled over.

Was asked if I was in a hurry to get anywhere. I said I just wanted to get home but I reckon the police officer could clearly see I was bricking it. She said that she was having to do 120mph to catch up with me, to which I said "I'm really sorry, but I wasn't doing anywhere near that". She said "I know, but you were still going a lot faster than you should have been" and I just nodded and kept quiet. No point trying to lie out of it :) She then went on to say that she didn't like giving out tickets but didn't like to see accidents either so told me to slow down and let me on my way. I thanked her and drove off. Very lucky.

I think the only thing that saved me was that although it was late at night there were still some cars on the road and I was still driving properly - ie. keeping left, indicating correctly, keeping sensible distances etc.

university mate apparently got off with doing 60-70 in a 30 with just a fine  mother was a barrister so probably knew the jargon :p (this would have been about 7-10 years ago)

a friends brother thought he was being followed by the police (middle of the day... not speeding or anything) so they took him round the houses xD cops did follow and pull them over I believe. can't remember the ins and outs but think it went something along the lines of "were you trying to avoid me" and "no.... but we were trying to see if you were following us" :p checked the car all fine, on their merry way :p

I got pulled about 1am after dropping some friends home from a movie night. was pretty bushed and not speeding. cop catches up to me and sits on my arse so close that I don't think I could see his headlights in my mirror. so I pulled off and went down a different road for a while. came back on the road and 20 yards further the cop was pulled in waiting for me. I drive past and on come the lights :p

asked me if I was trying to avoid him and said "no but you were really close so thought I was in your way/holding you up" to which I got told "haha wrong answer" went through the standard (I presume :p ) questions, ownership, insurance, drunk, anything illegal in car, where I've been where I'm going. has a look around the car, pats me down and asks again stating that everything checks out and he pulled me as I was driving suspiciously and can't understand why I pulled off :p talked for a little bit and just said again that he was really close so thought I was in his way or something? :p have a bit of a chuckle and then sends me on my way..... whilst then following me to the turn off to my street just as close as he had done previously.

should have brake tested him

A ban is effectively a loss of licence though.

I suppose it also depends on where you are, I know people who have lost their licence (i.e. been banned) for doing less than double the speed limit.

Never tell them what speed you were doing. Never admit if they ask you , "so would you say it was above 50....".

Don't know, don't know, don't know. You tell me if you have the proof. This is good for a single policeman.

Two policemen in a car can corroborate with each other, so they wouldn't really need proof and could just say yes he was speeding. Never helps to admit anything though.

Couple of years back I got stopped for doing 33MPH in a 30MPH limit, paid my fine, sent my license in etc.

Had a call to say the Copper had filled in the paperwork incorrectly, they returned my license and fine ;)

I've always thought of a loss of licence as having to sit a test again, not being banned for a few weeks, which is surely more a temporary suspension than a loss?

I guess I used the wrong syntax, you're still not able to drive a car - so you've temporarily "lost" your licence. :)

Sometimes a ban can lead to having to resit your test - it depends on what the court say.

Never been stopped or anything from Speed Cameras (yet). I don't really hang around either, I just pick my moments carefully for when it is safe to do so.

You'll find that 30-40MPH will be heavier enforced, so never even risk it in these zones.

Totted up twice (mostly sp30 but there was a ds10 in there once)

Banned for 6 months for doing stupid speed in the town centre. *whistles

and banned again for doing 116 on the M62

Had quite a reputation when I was a teenager. :o

Late for work one morning, a certain junction, sure i'd make that yellow, didn't. Couple cars behind me a fully livered Lmetro car lights up..:o
No arguments, hands up gimme the points and they just checked details and let me off.
Pulled up a long time ago in a MK1 Focus 1.6 Auto doing 113mph apparently on the M40 at 3am by a beemer of some sort. Got let go with a slow down or you'll kill yourself. Never had a point thus far, knock wood.

You wouldn't be able to do that now. In Hampshire the officer would have no choice but to summons you.

Got pulled once by an unmarked Volvo when I was 19 driving my mums car, doing 50 ish in a 30 for a time (admittedly a very wide 30 and it was late at night, clear and dry, little traffic etc), this was along the Tettenhall/Wergs Road and Henwood Road in Wolverhampton for those that know the area.

Got a good telling off, got to watch my own driving on their 'in car' video. Bit of a Q&A session...'Why do you think we have stopped you? What happens if you get caught speeding twice within 2 years of passing your test etc?'. I answered honestly and was pretty humble...admitted I was going too fast, and that I knew the speed limit was 30. I think I passed their attitude test...let off with a warning not to go so fast again.

Never been pulled since, got followed a few times in the Fiesta ST (admittedly that was very loud and heavily modified, so setting off a few alarm bells for them I expect).

got stopped tonight. 42 in a 30. was trying to safely overtake a cyclist didnt clock the 2 guys with a speed gun further down the road.

should have seen the smirk from the cyclist.

Had a nice moment today, travelling from Stoke to Wrexham doing a steady 40mph (the limit for an HGV on a single carriageway) I had a numpty in a relatively new C class behind me who was so close he couldn't really see past for a safe overtake.

Cue me slowing to 30 as we trundle through a village on a straight bit of road he decides to overtake at warp 9 nearly collecting an on coming car....

Just prior to the end of the 30limit was a camera van which I'm sure got him!

Had he waited another half mile he'd have found himself on a long NSL stretch where he could have passed me easily and safely!

As is often the case with drivers of nice cars, driven with a lack of intelligence which makes me wonder how they get into a position to be able to afford such a car!

Having no idea how fast you are driving sounds like careless driving to me. I think i would rather the speeding ticket!
