crucial m500 freezing up system intermittently

Hi,

I bought a new Crucial m500 off a well known auction site and have been having problems with it recently. When it works it works great but every so often - it could be 5 minutes or after 5 hours - it will just entirely freeze up my system. There is no BSOD, it just locks up. If I am doing anything with sound the sound will get stuck in a loop. I then have to hold the power button to turn the computer off.

I did a clean install on the SSD and kept my old OS install on my old hard drive which is what I am on now. I have ruled any other variable out other than the SSD because the computer works faultlessly when on my old HD.

I have upgraded the firmware to MU05 (was on MU03 when I got it). I can't remember whether the problem was present before I upgraded the firmware or not as I did it fairly soon after receiving it. Should I try a firmware downgrade to see if that fixes the problem? Problem with that is I can't seem to find any download links for the old firmware which still works.

Any other ideas? I have tried reinstalling the OS but that did nothing. It's a really annoying problem and I want to verify that the SSD is unfixable before buying a new one.

Thanks

Hi there,

I have tried different cables and ports before but no success.

I think I may have had a SATA controller out of date in device manager so I have given that a try. I'm running on the SSD at the moment. Will see how that goes.

be sure to run latest mb bios

what board you using?

latest intel rapid storage drivers might help aswell

Sorry forgot to say that mobo is up to date. Its a gigabyte p55a ud3.

I've got the latest intel rst drivers as well.

I ran for about 10 hours yesterday without any freezes so touch wood it's going ok so far!

Just had a freeze today. :(

Starting to think the hard drive is buggered and I should just cut my losses and buy another.

what ports you using? if marvell then try uninstalling the marvell sata driver and just use what windows installs

they were always flakey

try unplugging the sata cable and leave the drive powered on for at least 6 hours so garbage collection can kick in

same thing happened to my drive a few weeks ago , emailed crucial and they told me to try that and its worked fine since .

Hi there. Tried uninstalling the marvel driver but no joy....

I also tried unplugging the sata cable for 6 hours but no joy. Does the computer need to sit in the bios or something for those six hours? I just booted into my other hard drive for the six hours.

not sure tbh , i unplugged mine and booted back into windows and left it all day, the support guy said leave it atleast 6 hours , mine was unplugged for probably 10-12 hours .

perhaps try leaving it overnight/unplugged longer ?

are you all trying latest mb bios and any fw for the ssd?

Did you sort this out? Does it only happen when your not using the PC?

Nope still have the problem. It seems to happen both when left idle and actually using the computer. I haven't been able to find anything that makes it freeze all the time which makes troubleshooting hard. Every time I try something which I hope has fixed the problem the only thing I can do is just wait for the problem to happen again.

I can try leaving it unplugged all day tomorrow I guess.

Same happened to me: M500 480GB. Freezes my system everyday. Returned it.

Starting to think I should just cut my losses and buy a new one tbh.

Yup everything has been updated and it doesn't seem to make any difference. As I said in the OP, I was actually wondering if I could find older FM as I thought the latest FM might be causing me problems.

Hi,

I ended up buying a brand new one. Worked fine for a while before freezing so it's definiteluy an issue between the SSDs and my computer.

Still worth trying a secure erase you think?
