ISIS and Islamic militants - discussion

Just been watching the ABC News Channel and they are suggesting that a US airstrike against ISIS could be imminent, so it seems the rhetoric is ramping up quickly. Should be interesting as the next 24hrs play out.

Apparently the humanitarian operation has been ok'd. I don't know if ISIS will or can interfere with that, but if they do, I'm sure they will regret it.

When the news are reporting the military operation has started, but the pentagon are denying it, it makes me think that they are mobilizing, so they are ready to go on orders.

Obama confirming now. We're off and running.

If ISIS millitants threaten US personnel or the mountain where the Christians are, it will be goodnight vienna.

bombing or using drones against ISIS won't help as this may cause local tribes to join them if accidents happen etc, especially with US records dealing with drone strikes.

still killed less innocents than most western countries

obama is the most spineless jelly president there has ever been too

Your comment is completely inaccurate.

Obama has been pushing for US military action in Syria ever since the middle of last year. He was blocked by Congress and the House of Reps, both of which refused to support it. The Republicans were particularly strident in their refusal to approve Obama's bill.

Now Obama has authorised air strikes on Syria. Spineless? Seriously?

While we can take a short term 'kill it with fire' type approach to these IS types given the gains they've made recently and the population displacement/potential for even further killings happening now its not necessarily going to be sufficient. Its really down to the Iraqis themselves to sort this out, airstrikes can only achieve so much - it could be helpful to some extent but the US going too far with military action and they're in danger of simply propping up a Shia dominated Iraq. The situation has come about and won't be resolved until the various groups can make a compromise and that means the Shia politicians in power need to not alienate the Sunni groups... currently various Sunni tribal groups are either ambivalent towards or actively supporting IS - without that ambivalence or support IS wouldn't have had anywhere near the success it has had. There really isn't much we can do to help the situation, it is down to the Iraqi govt to compromise. Airstrikes aren't going to make the Sunni groups fell any less disenfranchised the only people who can do that are the Iraqi govt themselves, who's failure to work with them has allowed this to happen.

OK, maybe I have overreacted with the original statement, or maybe not, but surely we can all agree that obliterating this mob is the right thing to do before they commit any more massacres or release any more beheading videos?

Obliterate this mob and then watch another rise. Rinse and repeat.

Education is the only way to stamp it out and us in the west can do nothing to help it.

I do wonder sometimes if it is just anger caused by being jealous of the life one can have in the west.

Wonder how many curry shops will be short staffed from now on? I hope they kill the lot of them(ISIS)

Waw! That is strong!

Anyway, isis need to be stopped. As others have said though, others will probably come out of the woodwork too! Never ending circle!

I for one welcome this long overdue intervention. However I don't think Islamic State will "get their backsides handed to them" - they are extremely well funded and well equipped (all the American equipment they seized from the Iraqi army) and will still be a force to be reckoned with. They aren't stupid either, airstrikes means it'll be more difficult for them to operate but they'll switch tactics to cope.

Meanwhile the black flag of Islam flies over East London: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/07/flag-isis-jihadi-islamic-state-flown-poplar-east-london

bush would have just done it same as putin

Yes, he would have done.
Without considering all the facts or even the legality- just like Afghanistan/second Gulf war.

At least Obama thinks it through and takes his time before committing his troops to action. Iraq has repeatedly asked the US for help against ISIS- Obama has simply made sure this is the correct course of action, rather than making a knee-jerk reaction. Eminently sensible, really...

If by "spineless", you mean "not an idiot like the previous president", then I agree wholeheartedly.
