Hang on, Elite: Dangerous doesn't have the proper Newtonian physics?
Full Newtonian was fun in I-WAR, but it could also be a pain in the backside. I'm not sure whether Elite will have a toggle somewhere but i don't have a big problem with a 'point and shoot' style of flight where the autopilot is doing the complicated corrections to deliver the 'easy mode' course I require.

I guess in an ideal world you'd eat more fuel in this mode, because it's burning hard to compensate for where the ship wants to go, so there would be a tactical decision to be made when you 'go easy'.

But who knows what the final product will be like. By the time I get my hands on it a lot of things may have changed.

Hang on, Elite: Dangerous doesn't have the proper Newtonian physics? What's the point in an Elite game if it doesn't have that?

If you think the whole point of an Elite game is Newtonian physics then you've been missing something.

Newtonian physics in Frontier:Elite II ended up being a gameplay handicap and even Braben admitted it was a mistake - a mistake he said he wouldn't make again with ED. Fighting via Auto Pilot all the time was NOT fun!

ED isn't a simulation (Star Citizen is that > way) - it's a fun space combat/trading GAME.

I'm playing with my trusty Logitech Extreme 3dPro and it's doing a sterling job. I don't feel the itch to upgrade.

What do you do for your left hand - thrust etc? Im using a keyboard but not enjoying that aspect as much. When going in and out of auto pilot the speeds reset to the current one which is annoying. So if I turn auto pilot off, spin it around and turn it back on it has me reversing instead of accelerating like before.

Can you buy any thrusters on their own?

Tempted by an x52, but don't think I can afford it when saving for a house!

I'm in the same boat mate. I need a proper joystick and thrust, but, 1) I've heard people saying there are issues with the X52 (no idea what they are). 2) I dont have a great deal of room for all that on my desk and 3) its quite a bit of money on top of the £50 for the game right now.

Think I'll just check out the game with a controller tomorrow and see how it feels.

I've got the X52....I'd love to know what these issues are, as I find it amazing......maybe hardcore flight sim critques might find issues, but I can sit on conflict zones tearing up small fighters in my Sidewinder with ease, purely because the controls with my X52 is so fluid.....lights off with all the blue glowing lights and volume turned up is pretty special!

It's a shame because the logitech extreme 3D pro is a fantastic stick for the price. I have a 360 controller too but don't fancy that so much.

As said a million times before get a HOTAS X, cheap, has decent throttle, need more buttons use a modifier or voiceattack. If then you want to upgrade you shouldn't have a problem selling it on, either on here or the well known auction site.

X52pro issues are that some buttons don't appear to work correctly in game unless the control panel is open from what I've read, not tested it personally as it all seems to work fine for me. The only thing I had to make sure of was that I disabled the clutch function so the default boost control worked as intended.

So, I got hold of this yesterday and have been playing the combat scenarios. I've been playing using the classic keyboard layout because, well - it's Elite. :)

But, I can't see how to actually interact with the side panels and whatnot. I can call them up with the 1, 2 & 3 keys, but how do I actually select stuff and whatnot? I can't find a clear answer anywhere.

Ta. :)

Elite never did and was a big hit. Most everyone panned and hated the full newtonian model in the Frontier games. ED pretty much copies the original Elite flight model, with the ability to turn off the flight assist to get something more newtonian-like.

This. Bottom line is that joystick/HOTAS preference is a very personal thing, people think it's daft to even talk about it like this but having used several I can honestly say the difference from one to another is quite staggering.

Grab something like this, which has a proper throttle attached, don't like it? Try a T.16000M, don't like that? Try the X52.

From then on you're into serious money though.

.

I know it's not *the* point but I kind of liked it. Guess I was the exception as learning to fight with Newtonian physics was hard work.

Cut my teeth on Elite on the BBC so I'm cool with a partial-Newtonian flight model. I checked on the ED forums and it looks like the fought model with assists off will appeal to the Frontier and First Encounters player in me. Come pay day I'll find out now I've got a nice gaming PC.

I have no problem with how elite plays but you are totaly wrong about Newtonian game play in frontier you do not play in auto pilot lol and the only reason braben would say such a thing is because people could not be bothered to learn it correctly if you played using auto pilot then you have missed a great experience on the amiga.

The default keys for the menus are Q and E (left and right), and W and S (up and down) and SPACE is select.
