Forget 34UM95, here's 34UC97! (CURVED 34")

Curved screens? Maybe. Ultra wide screens? Definitely not.

I agree. People initially said 16:9 widescreen monitors were a fad and now virtually all monitors on the planet use that aspect ratio.

Cinemas have used 21:9 for decades and as TV's/monitors get larger I think that ratio will start to make a lot more sense especially for gaming and media. Even productivity-wise 21:9 is like having two 4:3 monitors on one screen when running 2 apps at a time so it's fantastic from that point of view as well.

The future is 21:9 as far as I can see. I think curved might actually make sense for a computer monitor you sit a couple of feet away from. Plus typically only one person will view a computer monitor at a time so you can make sure you're in the sweet spot bang in the middle.

I don't see curved widescreen televisions taking off primarily because more folks like to wall mount them and when you do that with a curved panel it just looks plain weird and unsightly. My missus would definitely never agree to it :) That and surely in a room where several people are watching it at the same time some of them will surely end up with odd reflections and distortion due to the viewing angle they're sitting at?

So in summary. 21:9 will be the standard for TV's and monitors in future IMO. Curved monitors used by an individual sat at a computer desk could definitely have potential but with larger televisions in your lounge I'm less convinced. I've seen curved televisions in shops and wasn't convinced so I'd need to sit down at a desk with a curved monitor to make a proper call on it though.

Well done for wordily admitting its down to preference lol

Well done for missing the IMO at the end of my first post that you quoted - i've said that all along but lets be clear on what im saying; the curve WILL help with viewing angles at the edge of the panel on the 34", i don't believe the 29" needs it. whether you like the curve or not, that's down to preference.

15cm sounds a lot ( and 2 cm of that is likely to be bezel) but its less than the length of a male thumb on each side ( as we are talking about peripheral vision mainly)
No, the screen is ~15cm wider - I didn't include bezel measurements. i say about 15cm as i know the 29" isnt actually 29" diagonal so they arent exact measurements, but i have both on my desk at work so i'll measure them when im back in.

I have sat down with the 29" on demo in central London and still think it will be a fad gimmick for a few years ( like 3d) amd will them fade out

Sure. Keep thinking that.

Is he arguing that 21:9 is a gimmick? Especially 3440x1440?

Some people...

Look at how gimmicky this looks:

Oh no, look at the gimmick aspect ratio in action:

Time to post my superior photo mrk! :p

:o

Bioshock infinite is truly beautiful looking on these IPS UW monitors.

But yes the 21.9 aspect ratio is FAR from gimmicky. It is the future for displays afaic even more so if you are a film buff!

These are looking impressive!!!! Yeah indeed worth every penny

Haha. so they saw my DIY matte bezel lower strip and used it in the curved model I guess :p

Worth noting too the backlight bleed. Looks like they have not fixed QC in this area. I will certainly not be swapping my 34UM95 that's for sure.

Is that linus agreeing with me on the affect of the curve on view angles?

TOTAL FAD

No, he's saying he doesn't see the point on televisions in a large room with multiple people viewing at the same time but said it seems to work pretty well for a single user at a monitor. Plus he said the curve was pretty subtle and not really noticeable whilst sitting at the desk.

The only real negative in that review is LG's seeming inability to produce a monitor without backlight bleed at the edges! That and they still haven't bundled it with a height adjustable stand nor a VESA mounting kit

Very tempted but I'd need to see how much extra it is above the flat version and if AOC can bring in their 34" 21;9 monitor for under £600 I'd probably go for that instead as I expect the curved 34" variants will be closer to £1000.

Did you even watch the video?

He clearly states that it's perfect as a computer monitor as the sublet curve means that when you move you head there's less distortion and viewing experienced that's improved.

It's only an issue, and "fad" on large monitors where more than one person is involved and not everyone is positioned in the centre. As such multiple people don't get the benefits. All of which is eliminated since it's a computer monitor and a single person is situation in the sweet spot centre at a desk.

Bar the backlight bleed, he's now using it as his daily driver since its a good upgrade over the flat 34UM95-P.

8:44 "The main difference is something that I actually feel rather than see and it's the lack of any fluctuations in brightness, contract or colour towards the edges and especially in the corners"

he was comparing it to the 34um95.

Yes I wastched it. Did you watch all of it?

Hey, i'm no the one calling it a fad.

Yes, I did, and you even quoted why it's not a fad and why he prefers it over the standard 34um95-p.

Less fluctuations in brightness, contract or colour towards the edges and especially in the corners, is a plus over the flat 34um95-p.

He also says he thought the large displays such as TVs were a fad, and that on the 34" it's good. Which is why it's now his daily driver at work until a G-Sync or FreeSync version arrives. At which point he'll be using it at home, most likely for gaming.

You're also the one that posted "TOTAL FAD", so you are calling it a fad.... or am I missing a subtle bit here. :/

The curve is quite subtle it seems. Far too early to say this is a 'fad'... the user experience will determine that. IMO though, it's a moot point as the major sticking point for IPS at the moment is the 60Hz issue... once that barrier is broken, then we'll be cookin'!

What monitor stand is that in the pics above btw... the LG monitor pic with Bioshock Infinite etc.? Is that a 29"?

Yes, you missed frankJH telling me the curve was a fad lol. Read up a few posts :p
