losing a dog,

Not all of us are as cold hearted as you and silver...

lol. So now I'm cold hearted. Despite owning and caring for dogs and paying for their vets bills and food and walking them every day and loving them every day, I'm suddenly cold hearted because I don't fall to pieces and become an emotional wreck when one of them dies ? Seriously, grow up ! They're dogs, not people, stop being so emo about the whole thing and get a grip. Honestly, some people !

How am I putting words in your mouth?

Your post that I quoted is in direct response to the post I made using the replacing a broken TV thing as an example.

You replied that it kinda is really the same thing.

The analogy was yours, I never spoke it, you did, I just implied that it could be similar fundamentally. Clearly replacing a TV involves no emotional attachment. A dog does, but a person ? Come on, you can never replace a person. The emotional baggage of losing a person is in a different league all together compared to a dog.

Yes, it was my analogy that you agreed was kinda the same thing and have mentioned several times now that if your dog dies, you just go out and get another one.

Why do you keep comparing the death of a person and making out that's my argument? I never said any such thing.

Why has this descended into people dictating how others should feel when losing a pet? Absolutely pathetic.

What I don't understand is that in your first second you label someone who thinks differently to you as an idiot, and then admit in your second sentence that you can't comprehend it in the first place.

You can't comprehend how someone else feels about their interpretation of family, so why label them as idiots?!

No, the statement is correct.

The first part is fact, you are an idiot if you in anyway think losing a pet is comparable to the death of one of your children.

The second is me explaining how I dont understand how people can do so, because they are not comparable in any way shape or form.

I can't comprehend the disdain for all animal life people like you must have. It's not human so it doesn't deserve to have the same right to a good life as a human. It's people like you that are the problem in this world, why we have wiped out half of the earths wildlife in the last 40 years and why we are going to leave a dust bowl for future generations. We are all animals, we all have the same right to life and right to live life.

Personally I'm not ashamed to admit I cried hard when she was put to sleep, just as much as the deaths of my grandparents.

Not all of us are as cold hearted as you and silver...

I dont have disdain for animal life, how did you manage to jump to that conclusion?

I have always had pets, and ALL of them bar one have died of old age.
The one that did not eventually passed away at 14 due to cancer.

I have a cat and a Labrador at the moment, I'm just not an emotional cripple who elevates their status to that of humans.

I don't need to do that to respect their right to life and treat them well.

I shall not hold my breath for an apology.

This is OCUK, do you not know this pattern by now ?
Every single thread on here pretty much, has an opposing opinion thrown in from a forum member and then 2 people (sometimes more as in this case) refusing to back down on their opinion.

facts
1 - Sliver compared losing a dog to replacing a TV
2 - several forum members said losing a dog was like losing a family member.
3 - like does not equal "the same"

Not getting upset over a dog dying that you claim to love IMO shows that either you are quite a cold person or has a completely different opinion to me on what "love" is. I will cry when my dog dies and I generally consider myself a pretty "cold" person so that makes me think you must be even more cold than I am.

I also accept your opinon that dogs are "lesser animals" and do not deserve the same emotional attachment as humans, I just don't agree with it. ;)

Sliver, aren't you medicated to **** to stop the voices in your head or am I confusing you with another member?

If so perhaps you aren't best placed to be dishing out views on how people should view their relationships to animals.

For the love of Dog! Will you please give it a rest!

You feel differently, cool. It clearly isn't going to change, so please please stop trying to explain to each other that the other is wrong, it will go on forever and this poor guys thread which he made to tell us about his dog who died an untimely death, will be wrecked.

I understand both points of view, really. It does rather depend on how integrated into your day to day life the dog is, how attached you are to the dog, if you have other pets, if you live alone or with others, if you "replace" them or not, and how you as a person cope with things.

Got you but I never said the "lesser animals" bit, or are you saying 'your' indirectly?

So sorry to hear about your loss and at such a young age. I lost both my German Shepherds last year, one aged 7 the other 11 they both died from tumours/cancer.

It really was like my heart had been ripped out, I still get upset now, you can't explain the pain to anyone who has never owned a dog, they are not pets, they are members of your family.

Firstly RIP little dog, for the OP.

I've just bought a family dog (rescue one / terrier mix) 3 month old pup. I've been a little taken back on how much joy and fulfillment she's brought us as a family. We all love her to bits. She has an amazing personality, playful, intelligent.

But to compare to the loss of a child ? That's a little insane sorry. The loss of one of my children would DESTROY me.

At 42yrs old now, and well having two family dogs many yrs ago.. Losing one to being run over and the other dying after getting a tooth removed, yes it was sad, and i remember even crying. But life did go on. I'm not so sure, life could go on if i lost a child. I would be so broken down that I wouldn't be so sure that i would ever come back as the person i am now.

Yes I'm on medication for Schizophrenia but how does this stop me from expressing my opinion ?

Look, there seems to be two sides to this. Me and a few others love dogs, own dogs, etc. but when they die we deal with it and just get on with things and get another dog. Then there are those people here who seem to be hyper emotional when their pets die and even try to equate that loss to the loss of a person.

I'm not saying that either side is right or wrong, I'm just saying I find the other side a bit wet. Call me cold hearted if you want, but you'd be wrong.

I'm on olanzapine. I take one 15mg tablet per day. Glad to know I'm not the only one here cursed with this. ;)

in the interests of turning this thread back into something approaching a dog appreciation thread

heres some more pics of my mutt

and the day we brought her home,

now i'm sure we can all agree that we either love, hate are indifferent to dogs and each and every one of us feels differently. personally I've lost what I look upon as one of my children here, she was a massive part of my life and something that I can never replace.

Sorry to hear about your dog 233, it's hard losing a well loved pet, especially when it's so sudden and at such a young age :(

Our mutt is pretty much on his last (getting shaky at times) legs now :(
He's 14 and a bit, and last year he suddenly got a bad cough which we took him in for, and about two days later was unable to keep any liquids down overnight so ended up at the vets at about 9am.
He's on heart and liver tablets and I don't think he's got much longer as he's getting harder and harder to feed (which means getting the liver table and diuretics down him is getting harder) :(
We're sort of looking at every day he's still with us as a bonus, even if he is currently taking anything up to about 2 hours a day to feed/tablet (7 tablets that have to be given in six separate stages due to timing and if they've got to be given with or before food).

I'm sorry for the loss of your dog. Those pics are lovely. RIP. :(

I used to have a friend that had two of the same breed as yours, and they were a wonderful addition to his home.
