GTX 980 SLI

SLI is excellent, it's easy to set up and involves minimal extra effort to use over a single card setup.

hows it crap for someones opinion on sli, thats my opinion on running 2 980s in sli (my opinion), just because its not your opinion its crap.
do you run 2 gtx 980s in sli propably not so you dont know how they run on your system.
also if you read my post i say sli is probably ok if you have the time and can be bothered to get it to run correct, obviously like you can.
thanks

I don't use 2 way SLI either but I can quite confidently say it does work very well indeed.

Well, I have my ex wife after me for more money, neighbour disputes on going, my car has an intermittent fault. So, in my usual rational way, I have just ordered another 980!! Will be with me tomorrow. :)

Whilst I may encounter issues, the fact that I can switch it on and off on the fly via individual game profiles, makes it sound like a flexible option. Also, Rome II just simply still needs more power to the engines!

RTW2 now works very well with SLI, in fact the more cards the better.:D

You were telling him it was crap and then saying it might be ok if you had the time. It's just contradictory is all. I'd call that misinformation rather than an opinion but each to their own. Your 4 hours are your own experience and I respect that.

Ok fair enough, I see your point.

Having never used SLI personally , I made the switch from a 780ti to two 970s , I've had the cards for just over a week. About 80% of my games works straight of the bat with sli and see major improvements from my 780ti ( @1266 it's about as fast as a single ref 980) , I have to tweak certain games with sli bits such as SoM , heck even early access games like assetto corsa has sli profiles . The only real game it has problems with that I cannot be bothered to sort ( even if I do its just to unoptimiZed yet to see benefits ) is Dayz standalone.

Thanks for the feedback guys and great to hear Rome II will respond well. Really looking forward to getting it for the w/e.

Part of the reason I'm keen to go for another one so quickly. I am finding the 980 so unbelievably cool and silent even overclocked, that another one just wont be an issue at all and in return will give me so much power. Half the time I'm gaming the fans on my single card don't even start to spin! Even then it will often start to cool by one fan and only under heavy load spin both. Fantastic bit of kit. So cant think of a better time to try sli.

I sought reassurance simply because a few years ago when I tried crossfire it was a nightmare.

I have 980 SLI on my Rog Swift (1440p, 144hz.)

I ran single card for a few days before finding the cash for the 2nd. My prior setup was 7990/7970 trifire.

Crossfire was annoying, I don't miss it. It wasn't helped by my 7990 that was able to roast a joint of beef. Stutter wasn't too bad on my old 1600p60hz monitor, but was crap in DX9 or on the 1440p144hz monitor (not enough bandwidth on xfire bridge for 1440p144).

SLI so far is fine. SoM now runs fine in SLI, although ultra textures are out (this is the case with single card too due to vram).
Ryse didn't have a profile but I got 55-60fps maxxed out anyway so I didn't bother as the Crytek engine is limited to 60fps.
Watch_Dogs I hadn't bothered playing on my old setup as it was a horrible mess. It would freeze for half a second every time I moved the camera. Now it's fine with SLI.
Titanfall is amazing. GSync and 144hz makes it like silk. I spend so long getting excited about the smoothness I tend to die lots.

Overall, I'd recommend SLI. I wouldn't bother with more than 1 980 unless you are running 1440p144 or 2160p60 though. At 1440p60 or 1080p144 or below, you just don't need it.

I personally miss my SLI setup and know am struggling to find another card the same as mine for a reasonable price. I would say if you have the money go for it, you will not regret it. In my experiences nvidia are pretty quick at get SLI profiles up and running ;)

Not had any issues with my sli 680s....i probably will never go back to a single card setup now.

Same here. My 680 SLi setup works just fine performance wise if not a tad noisy and hotter.

Edit: Yes there is a big drawback. Any further updates are going to cost me twice as much!!! ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread but im considering going for sli and was wondering if you can combine a 780 ti with the 980? and if so would there be any problems or is it as simple as plugging them in together?

Ive been running GTX 780's in SLI for a year and a half and I love the dual card setup, wouldn't part with my second card, but you should be informed that not all big released games support SLI at the start, not by a long shot.

I think it was about 6 months before Respawn got their asses in gear and got a fully working SLI compatible game. I emailed their (very lovely) community manager two and fro for months try to egg them on to get it finished. There is a thread on the SLI section of Nvidia's offical board where we all moaned for months on end (LOL).

Wolfenstein the new order never had SLI support, neither did Elder Scrolls online at launch although I think it did eventually. There was a point where my second card sat doing pretty much naff all but since I got into BF4 its had a full workout since it scales superb in that game.

So id still say go for it, but don't be surprised if your next favorite title doesnt support SLI at launch, or even 6 months down the line, it happens! ;) Why not take a look through the NV SLI forums and see what others have to say?

Again, im not trying to put you off because I like SLI but you should be informed when spending that much money.

Thanks for the post and info. Well I'm now running 980 sli. There is a reported issue of voltage on sli maxwell not being the same for both cards with the primary being undervolted. It would appear my set up is no different. Apparently a driver issue. However I have had no stability issues and everything seems to be OK. I only get about 16,000 in Firestrike Performance, but again I notice others reporting similar figures.

Rome II doesn't seem to benefit greatly, but Empire Total War luuves sli. So, it seems a general thumbs up, but I wondering if there's more performance yet to come with better drivers and the voltage quirk fix down the line.

I have posted a thread on This exact issue , it can be solved by clocking the higher voltaged card one higher than the other to boost voltage on the lower voltaged card , sounds counter productive but it works. Another member posted the semi fix. Thanks to that user I can get my overclocks above 1500mhz but run into voltage limit .
