Britain asked to cough up £1.9 billion to the EU

If ever there was a headline to rally a country against Europe that's it, Farage must be rubbing his flippers together with glee.

I think people think that laws like this are passed by everyone sitting round a table and all singing a paper to agree.

I imagine it's far more convoluted than this and many yes votes in the EU are actually against certain members wishes. Or are agreed to under pressure.

 Its got sod all todo with other countries. We aren't paying it because other countries are doing poorly. It's calculated on how our economy is doing.

As said this wasn't forced on us we agreed it. We also have a much smaller say in EU than we should as we have sidelined our self. We need to embrace EU and jump in with both feet. And get the say and influence we should.

It does have something to do with other countries in a way because they are seeing a benefit by not taking austerity measures, and we are in effect subsidising them as a result because we are having to make additional payments. If we had done nothing like some of these other countries have and ended up with a poor economy we would have probably received a rebate also. It is basically rewarding poor behaviour and punishing good behaviour within member countries.

Black Economy !!! I would have loved to been in the room back in 1995 when they were deciding on how they could justify charging governments for illegal activities carried out by their citizens.

Assuming their services are not index linked from a 1995 baseline:

Prostitution - 30% 'black market tax' for any service
Cigarettes - 90% 'black market tax'
Alcohol - 70% 'black market tax'
Drugs - 50% 'black market tax' for the first pill and then a decreasing scale more pills less tax
Drugs - 50% 'black market tax' for the first gram ........
Handling Stolen Goods - 10% 'black market tax' low tax rate given VAT was probably paid on original purchase

Why haven't they considered the cost of policing and healthcare to offset the problems of the above occuring.

Seriously WTF is going on by this precedence they could charge us for the air we breath, the cleaner it is the higher they tax us

So all these have less Prostitution\smokers\drinkers and drug takers?
France £801m
Germany £614m
Denmark £253m
Poland £249m
Austria £232m

A few hundred million rebate on what they pay in....whoppeeedoo, hardly worth getting ones knickers in a twist about....

Especially since we have had the British rebate built in permenantly since Thatcher negotiated it in 1984, which has been upsetting our EU neighbours ever since :p

They did it that way because you could see what kind of person is coming in to your country. But not now :(

Nice use of the passive 'see' when what you mean is 'control', with a points based system like japan etc where you recruit from a specific skill set subject to national requirement.

But because you used 'see', your point became a joke. What do you think the police, interpol, spy agencies and even facebook are doing. We know more about people in this age than ever before.

So come on, out with the truth, which EU member state immigrants are you bothered by?

Try telling poor Alice Gross' family that.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29471094

The BBC's Question Time has apologised to the family of Alice Gross after her sister said it was "horrible" to feature a question linking the 14-year-old's murder to immigration.

Nina Gross said it was "extremely insensitive" to use her "family's grief for political agendas".

Proud of yourself? Are you going to publicly appologise?

What I want to say to you for this post, I can't because I would be banned. Please take the gist, and perform the subsequent act.

edit: Same thing to the poster below. You should be utterly ashamed of yourselves.

True that's why we let in a x-murderer in from the EU that killed Alice Gross. Bet you're proud of that. But it's good you owned up to not giving a dame about who we let in.

Oh a not so good ninja edit. A bit slow like the EU ;)

Tony Blair agreed to a massive reduction in that rebate for a promise of CAP reform in 2005. As far as I know it was a promise that was never kept. The net result being that the rebate Thatcher agreed to is now worth a lot less. Something like 10 billion since 2005.

I don't think sovereign state implies do what it likes. Could you clarify what you mean by this?

In the UK there is no higher law making power than the UK parliament. All these laws that the EU comes up with, they have to be passed and signed into law by parliament. No parliament is bound by the laws passed by a previous parliament, which means there's nothing to stop us from repealing all or any laws that came from Brussels, though of course you'd have to be stupid to ignore the consequences.

I was just quickly looking it up and it seems our rebate is still about £3bn a year?
