290 to a 970?

4790k stock
290 Vapor-x
Kingston HyperX 8gb 2400MHz
Gigabyte Z97X UD3H-BK
Superflower 850W
Windows 7 professional
Phanteks Enthoo Pro

I play BF4 at 1680x1050 on high settings since I struggle to get 40fps on ultra. While playing temperatures are for the gpu are around 70c.

What's your GPU usage?

At that res and with that card you should be able to max every setting fine. Cpu isnt the issue either, as ive ran my 4790k at stock with sli 780's without any issues

100 X this.

That is your problem, a 970 isn't going to do much if anything at all to change performance as your gpu and cpu isn't doing much work at all.

Get a 1080p screen, probably cost less than what it would cost you on a 970 upgrade path.

Who has told you that a 970 is much faster? lol, anyways. I know W7 has some issues with BF4, try w8.1

These are the results of flying around on the test range for about 5-10 minutes, I'm planning on getting a monitor soon, most likely this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-007-AO

Tried bf4 just now, sli disabled so one stock 780 boosting to 1097mhz core speed. Max possible settings and res dropped to 1680x1050. Results in the following.

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
46618, 565593, 38, 134, 82.423

Bit of a laggy server, which can have an impact on fps in this game.

Something is very wrong here, your getting less than half the performance you should be.
I would find out what is wrong before you go committing to spending £100 on a GPU that has the same performance, your GPU also shouldn't be running hot, the Vapour-
X cooler is top notch.

@ 1080P Ultra IQ and 2x MSAA, PCS+ 290 @ 1125/1400 my results are:

Temperature: 66c

See that massive difference to what your getting? you should be getting the same.

A video, Mantle on the right. even with the Recording Software sucking the life out of performance i'm still averaging 100 FPS.

Reinstall your system, start from scratch, do whatever necessary to find the problem, something is very wrong.

I've been playing around with the settings on BF4 for a while now and I noticed that my resolution scale was at 200%. When I set it to 100% my frames almost doubled and I'm now getting over 100 fps..

Also done the system performance test with ultra settings and my fps is 70.

200% res scale will be the culprit then, particularly if you have any level of msaa set at all too. Good to see your sorted and it was something simple.:)

rofl, buying a 970 would actually lower your performance :)

I moved from a water cooled 290 that was clocked to 1250Mhz to a single 970 and then eventually to 970 SLI.

I had no regrets moving to the 970 from the 290 at all, more stable, faster in games, PhysX and of course native down sampling support.

Lol your probably one of the worst people to take advice from. You give a biased opinion depending on what brand your with, iv'e seen it a few times with you. You'll proper big up nvidia when you switch to them and shut down AMD, however when you move to AMD you proper big them up and shut down Nvidia lol

Id say to OP look at your airflow! I have a 290x Tri-x and my temps reach 72 degrees max on 1100Mhz overclock. and from looking at afterburner my fan never goes over 40%
And you have the Vapor x which is a better cooler so no way should you be getting higher temps and noise than me ofc with similar airflow.

Btw this is with gaming not benching. I don't bench, just game!

Only go for the 970 if you have a small case and airflow cannot really be improved much. Then it may be a worth while sidegrade not upgrade lol.

Indeed.

Well, the op's fps issue seems to be sorted. Temp wise, iirc the 290's do run a bit hotter than a comparable nv card. But 70 odd c isnt much to worry about. If it was me id just stick with what i have and plough the cash into a higher res monitor.

Thats more like it, panic over, now get a 1080P screen :)

Amdmatt has taken his opinions seriously tbh so maybe his opinion has some truth in it.
