Band Aid 30

I'd be happier if they paid their share (as they often get paid for the time they give to charity) as well as asking everyone else to.

And don't forget the first Live Aid made lots of money for all the artists except The Boomtown Rats due to album sales & merchandise and none gave any of the profits back.
Both the careers of Queen and Eric Clapton were revived because off the original Band Aid.
At the last Band Aid the artists (or most of them) did donate their profits (so I believe).

Live Aid didn't revive Queen's career, considering the year before they had a platinum selling album (The Works). Radio Ga-Ga was one the biggest global hit records of 1984. In fact Queen had four top 20 singles in the charts in that year BEFORE Band Aid and Do They Know It's Christmas. In fact Live Aid was probably the success it was because of Queen and Freddie Mercury's performance (with some jiggery-pokery by Queens sound guy) rather than it being the other way around.

Eric Clapton doesn't seem to have had his career revived either, it appears to have gone on pretty much as before....

The Boomtown Rats however did have their profile raised by their association to Live Aid, they failed to capitalise on it because frankly they were rubbish.

I'm not against giving money, I do donate, but I am against giving money because the cause simply sounds nice.

I give money to Practical Action, which is a charity focused on giving the poorer nations the chance to help themselves, by teaching them better farming, restoring their soil (http://practicalaction.org/turning-compost-into-food), and a bunch of other clever ideas like flood resistant floating farms.
This stuff puts the people back into control, and provides long term benefit.

no it doesn't you build a wonderful new water pump for the village and teach them how to use and maintain it.

come back 3 months later the pump will be broken of no use and everything of value stolen.

Very much this, Live aid was dying on its arse until Queen took to the stage.
They pretty much single handedly stopped it bombing completely on the night.

And this is exactly why I refuse to donate to any African charities.

How can you hope to help people who act like this? And why would you?

By pouring aid into the country, we're enabling them to maintain their "lifestyle", perpetuating the suffering, and causing thousands more children to be born into disease, famine and thirst.

Self Gratification.

So Bob and Bono's "time" is more then enough than dipping into their millions to help the cause?

It's all politics at the end of the day, but we don't need a song to make us aware of the situation in the world. And you've really got to start questioning where the money that has been raised over the last 30 years has actually gone...
